Oelwein boys cross country 7th in 2A; WV, S-F & Jesup girls ranked

In the week 11 rankings released Tuesday by IATC, the Oelwein boys cross country team is seventh in Class 2A. Among Class 2A girls teams, Sumner-Fredericksburg is 16th and Jesup is 19th. Wapsie Valley is 14th in girls Class 1A. Individually, Starmont-West Central’s Charlie Sieck is 5th among Class 2A boys. Oelwein’s Conall Sauser is 13th and Ray Gearhart is 18th. MacKenzie Wilson of Jesup is fourth among Class 2A girls. Teammate Clare Wright is eighth. S-F’s Hillary Trainor is sixth. Postseason still possible for Oelwein football

So, there is a chance. A fighting chance. Oelwein’s ability to qualify for the postseason took a hit last week when Union (2-2 in district, 4-2 overall), rallied to win its Homecoming game over the Huskies, 34-24. But, if Oelwein (1-2, 2-4) can bounce back with a win Friday against Wahlert Catholic (2-1, 4-2), it could clinch Class 2A District 4’s fourth and final playoff spot by beating North Fayette Valley (1-2, 4-2) in the last week of the regular season. Oelwein update: OHS band at UNI, WC student make repairs, plus business and sports notes

OHS BAND MEMBERS MARCH AT UNI: On Saturday, 15 Oelwein High School band students practiced alongside the UNI Panther Marching Band and then performed with it during halftime of the Panthers football game against Indiana State at the UNI dome in Cedar Falls. Altogether there were nearly 500 band members on the field performing all together. 2. Oelwein volleyball sweeps on Senior Night, heading to NICL tournament next week

Oelwein celebrated its seniors and a victory Thursday night. The Huskies (12-16) closed out the regular season on Thursday with a 3-0 win at home against Valley Lutheran (0-5). Seniors Zoey Reisner and Emma Smock led Oelwein in kills with seven apiece. The Huskies third senior, Lily King had three kills. Oelwein’s boys cross county had two runners finish in the top five on Tuesday at the Jesup Invitational. Waukon, however, took first as a team, edging Oelwein by four points. Jesup Golf and Country Club hosted the 24-team invitational under sunny skies with temperatures in the 60s. A northwest wind blew at 15-25 mph. Owner wins a year to fix decaying Oelwein downtown building

The owner of a deteriorated downtown building has 12 months to fix it, according to a court ruling issued Tuesday. Denying the city of Oelwein the authority to demolish the building at 27 S. Frederick, Magistrate Judge David James Hanson ruled that building owner Gary Wright needs to rehabilitate and restore the building to “habitable, usable condition. Oelwein Council ponders $500,000 contribution for events center

The question for city staff was, how can the city of Oelwein contribute $500,000 toward turning an empty downtown building into an events center? City Administrator Dylan Mulfinger presented a five-year draft plan to the City Council ahead of its workshop meeting on Tuesday to try and answer that. It would redirect tax money currently used for such things as economic development, housing improvement efforts, library accreditation and more. It also would ask the Oelwein Community Schools to forego $140,000 over four years. Starmont/West Central’s Charlie Sieck remains No. 3 in Class 2A boys cross country in the IATC’s weekly individual rankings released today. Oelwein’s Conall Sauser also stayed put at 7th. Conall Sauser, Ray Gearhart and Benjamin Driscoll finished 1-2-3 today at the Denver Cross County Invitational, leading the Huskies to another team championship. Trio arrested on drug charges after search of Oelwein home

Authorities arrested three people at an Oelwein house on Saturday and seized a laundry list of illegal drugs and “a large amount of US currency,” says a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. This was the third time since 2021 that the Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 107 7th Ave., Oelwein, said Sheriff Marty Fisher. Jeff Euans, 62, Anthony Alan Marrah, 36, and Jade Lynn Ann Nuerhring, 39, all of Oelwein, were arrested and transported to Fayette County Jail.
