5 N-P wrestlers advance to Saturday session at State Tournament

Five of the seven Nashua-Plainfield wrestlers that made it to Friday’s Class 1A session at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines have advanced to Saturday. Jayden (106) and Garett Rinken (126) will be wrestling for state championships. Nic Brase (113) and Titus Evans (170) can still make it into third-place matches. Kendrick Huck (132) will wrestle for seventh place. Charles City senior Kayden Blunt (29-7) placed eighth in the Class 2A 182-weight class at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines last week. Blunt, seeded no. 8 in the 182-pound weight class, was upset in his tournament opening match on Wednesday. No. 9 Jace Mulder, a senior from Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, pinned Blunt in 28 seconds. Seven Nashua-Plainfield wrestlers have survived the first two days of the State Tradition Tournament in Des Moines. Four remain in contention for first-place finishes. Huskies Jayden Rinken (106), Nic Brase (113), Garrett Rinken (126) and Titus Evans (170) have advanced to the semifinals on Friday. Huskies advancing to Friday in the consolation bracket are Kendrick Huck (132), Kaden Wilken (138) and Alden Sullivan (195). Nashua-Plainfield is in third place as a team after Day 1 of Class 1A wrestling at the 2023 State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. Nashua-Plainfield and North Butler are moving deeper into the postseason after first-round victories Monday night. The Huskies won 80-63 on the road over Waterloo Christian, setting up a showdown on Thursday in Fairbank. Nashua-Plainfield (12-10) will tip off at 7 p.m against Wapsie Valley (18-4). FRIDAY UPDATE: Luft wins 3rd State title

Three-time State champion. Charles City senior Lily Luft (40-0) won the 130-pound title Friday night with a 9-0 major decision over Chloe Sanders (47-5), a ninth-grader from Vinton-Shellsburg who was seeded No. 2. Luft was the top seed. Luft was dominant throughout the two-day IGHSAU Championships in Coralville. She had two first period pins and three major decisions. Including Luft, five Comets qualified for State, but four were finished on Thursday. Ava Thompson and Leah Stewart started strong by securing first match pins. Oelwein sophomore Ryley Hartman’s season ended today (Friday, Feb. 3) at the IGHSAU State Wrestling Championships in Coralville. She posted a 3-2 record in the tournament and 34-11 for the season. Nashua-Plainfield sophomore Kylie Vance is going to the State Girls Wrestling Tournament. The Huskies traveled to Luther College in Decorah on Friday for the IGHSAU Region 7 Qualifier. Vance (16-9) placed third in the 190 weight class by pinning Mason City ninth-grader Taryn Boehmer (32-18) at 1:23.
