CC’s Blunt takes 8th at State Wrestling Tournament

Charles City senior Kayden Blunt (29-7) placed eighth in the Class 2A 182-weight class at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines last week.

Blunt, seeded no. 8 in the 182-pound weight class, was upset in his tournament opening match on Wednesday. No. 9 Jace Mulder, a senior from Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, pinned Blunt in 28 seconds.

Returning to the mats on Thursday, Blunt won his first two wrestle backs convincingly. First he won a 13-2 major decision over over no. 23 Cael Burmester (25-16), a junior at Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Then, he pinned no. 18 Wayne Johnston (29-13), a junior at Knoxville, at 3:03.

On Friday, Blunt defeated no. 4 Karson Downey (39-4), a junior at Clarinda, in sudden victory 5-3.

On Saturday Blunt faced Mulder again, who won by a 7-6 decision.

In the seventh-place match, no. 6 Gable Dayton (34-7) won by fall over Blunt at 47 seconds.

Blunt earned 7 team points for Charles City.

Nathan Lopez (2-2, 3 team points)

CC senior Nathan Lopez (28-11), no. 20 at 145, won his first wrestle back of the day by an 8-1 decision over no. 19 Jacob MacGargill (40-16), a freshman at Shenandoah.

No. 12 Brent Dennhardt (39-6), a sophomore from Glenwood, then won by 13-3 major decision over Lopez, eliminating him from the tournament.

Talan Weber (2-2, 4 pts)

CC junior Talan Weber (21-6), no. 13 at 152, won his first wrestle back of the day by a 7-4 decision over no. 19 Jesse Grimes (34-12), a senior at North Fayette Valley.

Then, no. 5 Brent Yonkovic (23-6), a sophomore from West Delaware, won by fall at 1:50 over Weber, eliminating him from the tournament.

CC senior Ethan Peterson (21-8), no. 12 at 195, won his first wrestle back by a 6-4 decision over no. 11 Emmitt Fleshman (37-10), a junior at West Lyon.

Then, no. 14 Jacques Zomermaand (32-15), a junior from Sioux Center, won by fall at 2:39 over Peterson, eliminating him from the tournament.
