Five Comets qualify for State Traditional Wrestling Tournament

Five Charles City wrestlers qualified on Saturday for the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament: Carter Haberkorn (106), Nathan Lopez (145), Talan Weber (152), Kayden Blunt (182) and Ethan Peterson (195).

The State Tournament begins Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Class 2A matches begin at 1:30 p.m.

Haberkorn will face Mount Vernon junior Klayten Perreault (37-6) in the opening round at State.

Lopez will face Glenwood sophomore Reese Fauble (21-9).

Weber will face Okoboji/HMS senior Bryce Dodge (26-13).

Blunt has a bye in the first round and will face either Boyden-Hull Rock Valley senior Jace Mulder (37-8) or Winterset junior Carson Bellamy (32-18).

Peterson will open against Waukon senior Corbyn Palmer (21-7).

CHARLES CITY RESULTS

As a team, Charles City placed fourth at the Class 2A District 3 tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11, in Decorah.

Individually, wrestlers who placed first and second place in each weight class qualified for State.

Junior Carter Haberkorn (19-11) took second at 106 by winning the second-place match over New Hampton junior Landon Bruess (24-21) by 8-4 decision.

Freshman Jacob Vance (11-18) took fourth at 138.

Senior Nathan Lopez (26-9) took second at 145 by winning the second-place match over North Fayette Valley sophomore Logan Boehm (28-22) by fall at 2:19.

Junior Talan Weber (19-4) took first at 152 by defeating senior North Fayette Valley Jesse Grimes 34-10 by 7-4 decision.

Junior Colton Anderegg (17-21) took fourth place at 160.

Senior Kayden Blunt (26-4) took first at 182 with a 12-8 decision over Crestwood sophomore Brock Voyna (32-7) in the title match.

Senior Ethan Peterson (20-6) took first at 195 with a win by fall at 5:37 over New Hampton senior Isaac Howe.

The team results were 1. Crestwood (173.5), 2. New Hampton/Turkey Valley (157), 3. North Fayette Valley (144.5), 4. Charles City (123.5), 5. Decorah (96.5), 6. Waukon (87), 7. Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (79.5) and 8. Oelwein (26).
