5 N-P wrestlers advance to Saturday session at State Tournament

Five of the seven Nashua-Plainfield wrestlers that made it to Friday’s Class 1A session at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines have advanced to Saturday.

Jayden (106) and Garett Rinken (126) will be wrestling for state championships.

Nic Brase (113) and Titus Evans (170) can still make it into third-place matches.

Kendrick Huck (132) will wrestle for seventh place.

Below are updates from today’s action along with their cumulative win-loss record at the tournament and team points earned

JAYDEN RINKEN (3-0, 21 pts)

Sophomore Jayden Rinken (46-2), seeded no. 1 at 106, won an 8-4 decision over no. 5 Cooper Hinz (34-6), a freshman from Jesup, in the semifinals today.

Rinken is done wrestling for the day. On Saturday, he will face no. 6 Mason Shirk (47-3), a freshman at Wilton.

Class 1A matches begin at 9 a.m.


NIC BRASE (2-1, 10 pts)

Akron-Westfield junior Cael Morrow (37-1), no. 2 at 113, won a 6-1 decision over N-P sophomore Nic Brase (42-7), no. 6, in the semifinal round. Brase is still in contention for third place, but the lowest he could finish is sixth.

Brase is done for the day. On Saturday, he will face no. 9 Austin Etzel (46-7), a sophomore from Wilton. The winner will move on to the third-place match. The loser will go to the fifth-place match.



GARETT RINKEN (3-0, 25 pts)

Senior Garrett Rinken (50-0), no. 1 at 126, won a 14-4 major decision over no. 4 Preston Klosterman (32-6), a sophomore from Alburnett, in the semifinals.

He is done for the day. On Saturday, Rinken will face no. 6 Dawson Schmit (40-7), a senior at Wapsie Valley, in the championship match.


KENDRICK HUCK (3-2, 8 pts)

Senior Kendrick Huck (35-11), no. 7 at 132, won a 5-2 decision over no. 6 Dylan Stein (41-4) a sophomore from Lenox. Then, no. 10 Holden Mathis (51-5), a junior from MFL MarMac, won a 7-0 decision over Huck.

He is done for the day. On Saturday, Huck will face no. 9 Carson Seuntjens (47-6), a senior at Kingsley-Pierson, in the seventh-place match.


KADEN WILKEN (2-2, 8 pts)

No. 16 John Helton (52-11), a senior at St. Albert, won a 6-2 decision over  N-P senior Kaden Wilken (36-18), no. 12 at 138, ending his tournament.


TITUS EVANS (2-1, 11 pts)

No. 2 at 170 Jace Nelson-Brown (39-6), a junior from Emmetsburg, won in sudden victory – 1 (4-2) over N-P junior Titus Evans (29-7), no. 6. Evans is still in contention for third place, but the lowest he could finish is sixth place.

He’s done wrestling for the day. On Saturday, he will take on no 5. Jacob Thiry (33-12), a senior at Don Bosco, with the winner going on to the third-place match.


AIDEN SULLIVAN (3-2, 10 pts)

No. 13 Ben Saxton (41-5), a senior at Emmetsburg, won a 6-2 decision over N-P junior Aiden Sullivan (42-13), no. 9 at 195, ending his tournament run.
