Huskies in 3rd after day 1 at the State Wrestling Tournament

Nashua-Plainfield is in third place as a team after Day 1 of Class 1A wrestling at the 2023 State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. Don Bosco has the team lead with 55 points, followed by Wilton with 43 and Nashua-Plainfield with 38.

All 13 of Nashua-Plainfield’s wrestlers will return to action on Thursday.

Five Huskies remain in contention for individual state championships: Jayden Rinken (106), Nic Brase (113), Garrett Rinken (126), Kaden Wilken (138), and Titus Evans (170). Eight others can still make it to the podium through wrestle backs.

JAYDEN RINKEN (1-0, 4 pts)

Sophomore Jayden Rinken (43-2), seeded no. 1 at 106, got bye in the first round.

In the second round, Rinken won a 4-0 decision over no. 17 Kanaan Delagardelle (22-13), a sophomore at Don Bosco. In the first round, Delagardelle defeated no. 16 Caleb Wisecup (30-11), a junior from Ogden. by fall at 1:37.

Rinken is finished wrestling for the day. Tomorrow, he will first take on no. 8 Reanah Utterback (36-8), a sophomore from Signourney-Keota.


NIC BRASE (1-0, 4 pts)

Nic Brase (41-6), no. 6 at 113, got a first round bye.

In the second round, he won a 9-4 decision over no. 11 Caleb Swedin (38-4), a freshman at Graettinger. Swedin pinned no. 22 Landen Frost (22-17), a freshman from Wapsie Valley, at 1:45 in round 1.

Brase is finished wrestling for the day. On Thursday, he will first take on no. 3 Case Monat (36-3), a junior from North Tama.


HAYDEN MUNN (1-1, 2 pts)

In the first round, junior Hayden Munn (37-14), no. 19 at 120, won a 6-1 decision over no. 14 Kellen Oliver (28-16), sophomore from Riverside.

In the second round, Teague Smith (46-1), of West Hancock, won an 8-2 decision over Munn.

Munn is done wrestling for the day.

In his first consolation bracket match on Thursday, Munn will face no. 20 Josh Winey (29-16), a freshman from Earlham.


GARETT RINKEN (1-0, 6 pts)

Senior Garrett Rinken (48-0), no. 1 at 126, got a bye in the first round.

In the second round he pinned no. 18 Aiden Golston (36-8), a junior from Moravia, at 1:23. Golston pinned no. 17 Brady Clark (28-14), a sophomore from Sigourney-Keota, at 5:27 of their first round match.

Rinken is finished wrestling for today. On Thursday, he will begin with a match against no. 9 Carson Thomsen (20-6), a junior from Underwood.


KENDRICK HUCK (0-1)

Senior Kendrick Huck (32-10), no. 7 at 132, got a bye in the first round.

In the second round, no. 10 Holden Mathis (49-4), a junior at MFL MarMac, won by fall at 6:55 in overtime over Huck. In the first round, Mathis pinned no. 23 Hunter Wernli (35-15), a sophomore at North Mahaska, at 3:54 of their first round match.

Junior Titus Evans (27-6), no. 6 at 170, got a first-round bye.

In the second round, he won by fall at 2:30 over no. 11 Michael Raines (37-9), a junior at New London. Raines pinned no. 22 Kaden Stites (36-14), a senior at Alta/Aurelia, at 2:48 of their first round match.

Evans is done wrestling for the day. On Thursday, his first match will be against no. 3 Jack Clarahan (41-2), a senior from Sigourney-Keota.


TATE WHITE (0-1)

Junior Tate White (30-12), no. 12 at 182, lost his first round match to no. 21 Ryan Funke (34-10), a senior at Beckman Catholic. Funke won by fall at 3:01.

White received a bye in the first round of consolation. He is done wrestling from the day.

In the second round on Thursday, he will take on no. 6 Dillen Ammons (38-5), a senior at Pleasantville.


AIDEN SULLIVAN (1-1, 4 pts)
