West Central (7-12) will open the Class 1A Region 6 volleyball playoffs at home on Monday, Oct. 17 against Kee, Lansing (1-16). Game time is 7 p.m. The winner will travel to Don Bosco (21-9) on Wednesday, Oct. 19, to take on the 8th-ranked Dons. But first, the Blue Devils have one last regular season match. Charles Theater to host free showing Oct. 16 of film about human trafficking in Iowa

CONTRIBUTED REPORT The North Iowa Coalition Against Human Trafficking will present the movie “Gridshock” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct 16 at the Charles Theater in Charles City. Admission is free. TMDLs include analyses and methods for improving water quality for water bodies on the state’s Clean Water Act 303d impaired waters list. Postseason still possible for Oelwein football

So, there is a chance. A fighting chance. Oelwein’s ability to qualify for the postseason took a hit last week when Union (2-2 in district, 4-2 overall), rallied to win its Homecoming game over the Huskies, 34-24. But, if Oelwein (1-2, 2-4) can bounce back with a win Friday against Wahlert Catholic (2-1, 4-2), it could clinch Class 2A District 4’s fourth and final playoff spot by beating North Fayette Valley (1-2, 4-2) in the last week of the regular season. OHS BAND MEMBERS MARCH AT UNI: On Saturday, 15 Oelwein High School band students practiced alongside the UNI Panther Marching Band and then performed with it during halftime of the Panthers football game against Indiana State at the UNI dome in Cedar Falls. Oelwein volleyball sweeps on Senior Night, heading to NICL tournament next week

Oelwein celebrated its seniors and a victory Thursday night. The Huskies (12-16) closed out the regular season on Thursday with a 3-0 win at home against Valley Lutheran (0-5). Seniors Zoey Reisner and Emma Smock led Oelwein in kills with seven apiece. The Huskies third senior, Lily King had three kills. Duck season begins Oct. 1 in Iowa’s north zone

BY THE IOWA DNR Waterfowlers have waited all year for this: for the next three weekends in Iowa, there will be an opening day for duck and goose hunting. The north zone opens on Oct. 1, the central zone opens on Oct. 8 and the south zone opens on Oct. 15. Each zone is open seven days, then close for seven days, before re-opening. Oelwein’s boys cross county had two runners finish in the top five on Tuesday at the Jesup Invitational. Waukon, however, took first as a team, edging Oelwein by four points.
