Iowa’s pheasant opener was busy, with lots of hunter success
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE IOWA DNR Hunters are home, the dogs are resting and Iowa’s opening weekend of pheasant season is in the rearview mirror. Reports from across the state varied from excellent up north to good in central and southwest Iowa, with the consensus that hunting will continue to improve once all the corn is harvested. No. 6-seed Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont upset No. 3 Wapsie Valley 3-1 (25-22, 11-25, 25-20, 25-21) in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the State volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. After the Rockets took the first set, 25-22, Wapsie Valley, appeared to be asserting dominance in the second set. The Warriors put an end to back-and-forth scoring with EBF when the Rockets hit 10 points. The Warriors went on a 15-1 scoring run. Western Christian defeats Sumner-Fredericksburg in State volleyball quarterfinals
Western Christian defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-24, 25-18) in the Class 2A quarterfinals on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. Oelwein man charged after September stand-off with police, altercation at hospital
UPDATE (April 6, 2023): A pretrial conference is scheduled for April 24 with a jury trial to begin May 10. An Oelwein man is charged with multiple felonies following a stand off on Sept. 24 with police, as well as a scuffle with officers later at the hospital. Jerad Lee Stewart, 22, is charged in Fayette County District Court with two counts of disarming a peace officer and one count of assault on persons in certain occupations while displaying a dangerous weapon, all Class D felonies. Sexual harassment lawsuit winner in 2013 now facing unrelated theft charges
An Orchard, Iowa, woman who won a sexual harassment lawsuit against Floyd County in 2013, is facing felony charges based on accusations that she stole more than $21,000 over 10 years from her private law firm employer. Theresa Ann Farmer, 59, of Orchard, Iowa, on Friday waived a preliminary hearing in Floyd County Court regarding charges of ongoing criminal conduct (Class B felony), first-degree theft (Class C felony) and unauthorized use of a credit card. Floyd County Board to consider more funding for communications position
The Floyd County Board of Supervisors on Monday plans to review and possibly vote on a communications and marketing partnership with the Charles City school district, municipal government and Area Development Corporation. The board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in the Floyd County Courthouse Assembly Room. At the board’s Oct. 17 meeting, city and school district officials urged the county to join a 28E agreement to fund a community marketing and promotion liaison position. OF PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS RELEASE from Oct. 29, 2022 FAIRBANK, Iowa – On October 28, 2022 at approximately 5:05 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a missing four year old child. The child was reportedly last seen at approximately 3:45 PM in the front yard of his residence in the 1400 block of 145th Street Fairbank, IA. Multiple agencies responded to assist with the search. It could take until February for repairs to get done at Viper Lanes in Oelwein, according to a social media post by the bowling alley’s ownership. Viper Lanes and P.J.s Bar and Grill closed “until further notice” earlier this week after Oelwein was soaked by an estimated 1.4 inches of rain overnight Monday. Defending state champion West Hancock held on Friday night to defeat Wapsie Valley, 16-9, in the second round of the Class A football playoffs. West Hancock led 16-3 at home in Britt, when Wapsie Valley opened the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Hunter Kane. Starmont/West Central senior Charlie Seick placed fourth at the Iowa High School Class 2A Cross Country Championships today in Fort Dodge. He completed the first mile in 5:07.34 and was in eighth place, moving up to sixth by the end of the second mile. The top two finishers were from Des Moines Christian.
