Reports from across the state varied from excellent up north to good in central and southwest Iowa, with the consensus that hunting will continue to improve once all the corn is harvested. EBF upsets Wapsie Valley at State volleyball tournament in four sets

No. 6-seed Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont upset No. 3 Wapsie Valley 3-1 (25-22, 11-25, 25-20, 25-21) in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the State volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. After the Rockets took the first set, 25-22, Wapsie Valley, appeared to be asserting dominance in the second set. The Warriors put an end to back-and-forth scoring with EBF when the Rockets hit 10 points. The Warriors went on a 15-1 scoring run. Western Christian defeats Sumner-Fredericksburg in State volleyball quarterfinals

Western Christian defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-24, 25-18) in the Class 2A quarterfinals on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. Oelwein man charged after September stand-off with police, altercation at hospital

UPDATE (April 6, 2023): A pretrial conference is scheduled for April 24 with a jury trial to begin May 10. An Oelwein man is charged with multiple felonies following a stand off on Sept. 24 with police, as well as a scuffle with officers later at the hospital. Jerad Lee Stewart, 22, is charged in Fayette County District Court with two counts of disarming a peace officer and one count of assault on persons in certain occupations while displaying a dangerous weapon, all Class D felonies. Missing child’s body found in Buchanan County pond

IOWA DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS RELEASE from Oct. 29, 2022 FAIRBANK, Iowa – On October 28, 2022 at approximately 5:05 PM, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a missing four year old child. The child was reportedly last seen at approximately 3:45 PM in the front yard of his residence in the 1400 block of 145th Street Fairbank, IA. Multiple agencies responded to assist with the search. Repairs to Viper Lanes likely to take months

It could take until February for repairs to get done at Viper Lanes in Oelwein, according to a social media post by the bowling alley’s ownership. Viper Lanes and P.J.s Bar and Grill closed “until further notice” earlier this week after Oelwein was soaked by an estimated 1.4 inches of rain overnight Monday. Wapsie Valley football season ends in Britt

Defending state champion West Hancock held on Friday night to defeat Wapsie Valley, 16-9, in the second round of the Class A football playoffs. West Hancock led 16-3 at home in Britt, when Wapsie Valley opened the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Hunter Kane. The point after failed however, and the Eagles held the Warriors scoreless the rest of the way. Seick takes 4th at State Cross Country meet

Starmont/West Central senior Charlie Seick placed fourth at the Iowa High School Class 2A Cross Country Championships today in Fort Dodge. He completed the first mile in 5:07.34 and was in eighth place, moving up to sixth by the end of the second mile. The top two finishers were from Des Moines Christian. Aaron Fynaardt was first with a time of 15:50.62, and freshman Caleb Ten Pasa was second at 16:06.33. Okoboji Milford sophomore Evan Osler took third at 16:18.10. Conall Sauser finished 11th to lead the Oelwein boys cross country team to fifth place at the Iowa High School Class 2A Cross Country Championships today in Fort Dodge. Sauser’s time was 16:45.3. Wapsie Valley volleyball returns to State

Wapsie Valley volleyball made quick work of Beckman Catholic tonight in the Class 2A Region 7 championship, returning to the State Tournament. The Warriors (41-4) defeated the Blazers (28-11) in three sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) at the neutral site in Manchester at West Delaware High. Last year, the Blazers defeated Wapsie Valley 3-2 in this title game to earn the State bid. The Warriors last made it to State in 2020, but had to pull out before the first game because COVID-19 was detected on the team. In 2019, Wapsie Valley took second in the Class 1A State Tournament. Convictions Ethan Lee Palmer, 48, of Oelwein, pleaded guilty Oct. 5 to second-offense possession of methamphetamine (aggravated misdemeanor) and was placed on two years of formal probation on a suspended 10-year prison sentence. An $855 fine plus surcharge was also suspended. Ralph Deangelo Barron, 55, of New Hampton pleaded guilty to a Class C felony manufacture, delivery and possession of methamphetamine and on Oct. 17 received two to five years of probation on a suspended 10-year prison sentence. The Oelwein boys cross country team is headed to State after winning the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday at Hickory Grove Golf Course in Oelwein. The Huskies place first as a team with 63 points Denver was second with 66. The Huskies also qualified four individuals for the State Meet, which will be next week in Fort Dodge.
