Wapsie Valley volleyball returns to State

Wapsie Valley volleyball made quick work of Beckman Catholic tonight in the Class 2A Region 7 championship, returning to the State Tournament.

The Warriors (41-4) defeated the Blazers (28-11) in three sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) at the neutral site in Manchester at West Delaware High. Last year, the Blazers defeated Wapsie Valley 3-2 in this title game to earn the State bid.

The Warriors last made it to State in 2020, but had to pull out before the first game because COVID-19 was detected on the team.

In 2019, Wapsie Valley took second in the Class 1A State Tournament. Sidney won the championship match 3-1.

Against Beckman Wednesday night, senior Sydney Matthias led the Warriors with 30 assists and by landing 19-of-20 serves, including three aces.

Senior Hannah Knight led WV in kills with 12, followed by 9th-grader Taylor Buhr (9), junior Anna Curley (7), senior Kalvyn Rosengarten (6) Matthias (4) and 9th-grader Grace Mullihan (3).

Senior Emma Jones led in digs with 23, followed by Knight (18), Buhr (13), Matthias (11), junior Kallie Franzen (7), Curley (5), Mullihan (3), Rosengarten (2), senior Macy Ott (1).

Curley had the most blocks for WV with 5. Rosengarten had 2. Matthias and Knight each had 1.

Jones was 14-of-14 serving. Buhr was 11-of-13 with one ace. Curley was 9-of-9, Knight was 8-of-8 and Ott was 8-of-9.

The Warriors have won six straight since their loss to Denver in the North Iowa Cedar League conference tournament semifinals. They took third in the tournament.

Four of the eight teams in the Class 2A State Tournament are from the NICL: Dike-New Hartford (43-2), Denver (36-10), Sumner-Fredericksburg (31-10) and Wapsie Valley.

The Warriors will take in Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Coralville.
