Charles City girls basketball season update

The Charles City girls basketball team has yet to notch a win this 2017-18 season. The Comets came close Dec. 15 at home against Oelwein, but fell 59-51.Charles City returned from the holiday break on Tuesday and fell at home against Waverly-Shell Rock. Comet boys basketball defeats Waverly in OT

WAVERLY — Assistant Charles City High School boys basketball coach Brad Ritter was obviously excited Tuesday night in Waverly when he jumped on Twitter. “COMETS WIN IN OT!” Ritter tweeted. “Comets defeat the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks 65-61 in Waverly! Comets advance to 7-1 on the season. #WeAreCC #iahsbkb #ccbbkb #NEIC #EndedTheDrought.” The drought has persisted since 2012, according to Waverly Newspapers sports editor Tyler Poslosky. The Charles City High School bowling team is back in action Friday, Jan. 5, when they travel to Decorah. They’ll get started at 4 p.m. at Oneota Lanes, 400 Heivly St. Decorah.The Vikings girls team is 3-2 with a match score average of 1,963.8.The Comet girls are 4-0 with an average of 2,692.5.The Decorah boys are 5-0 with a match score average of 2,938.4.The Comet boys are 4-0 with an average of 2,878.5.Of high school girls bowling teams with at least four matches in, Charles City has the fifth best match average in Iowa. Macy Ross rolls night’s highest series as Comets win at home

Charles City bowlers led by top scorers Macy Ross and Hunter Brockney defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday night at the Comet Bowl. Ross led the Comet girls to a 2,777 to 2,046 match victory. Ross had a two-game series score of 470 by rolling two 235 games. She had the top score of all girls and boys at the match. Maddie Ross rolled a 364 series, followed by Baili Girkin (352), Katie Sickman (344), Sara Mitchell (338) and Aryah Nelson (305). Charles City won four of five baker games to take the round. Charles City volleyball must get through Waverly Monday night to enter State Tournament 

The bracket comes down to this: another rematch between the Charles City varsity volleyball team against Waverly-Shell Rock. The title match for Class 4A Region 5 begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. The Comets opened region play Tuesday, Oct. 24 with a match victory over Webster City in three games (25-15, 25-11, 25-14). Waverly-Shell Rock dispatched Waterloo East in three games as well (25-18, 25-12, 25-17) to advance. Charles City girls cross county place 5th at State

SUNDAY UPDATE — Charles City’s Kiki Connell, who placed sixth at the Class A State Girls Cross Country Championship on Saturday  ran most is the race with only one shoe, according to her mother. At about 200 meters she lost her left shoe. Kiki, who was playing violin and doing face painting Sunday afternoon at a church festival, said she was tripped up at the start Saturday and her shoe was knocked off. After the initial shock, she decided to just push on with one socked foot. With the exception of an occasional root, it went fine, she said. CC’s Connell, Deeter and Litterer compete at State

FORT DODGE, Iowa — Three Comet boys ran well Saturday at the Class 3A State Cross Country Championship with senior Gavin Connell leading the way with a time of 16:57.6. He placed 36th. Charles City junior Mason Deeter placed 46th with a time of 17:01.1.  Nick Litterer, also a junior, placed 102 with a 17:51.8.    “These guys had a great day! Gavin in for 36th, his best place finish in 4 years! Mason at 46th (top 35%), and Nick at 102!” head coach Ryan Rahmiller tweeted. No-quit Comet football falls in Tama 

Two late scores by South Tama gave the Trojans a 29-20 win over the Charles City Comets in Friday night football action. Charles City is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in Class 3A District 3. The game featured Charles City’s Seth Niichel returning an interception for a touchdown to give the Comets a 20-13 early in the fourth quarter. Charles City 2017-18 Football Schedule 

The Charles City Comets football team begins its 2017 campaign Friday, Aug. 25, on the road in New Hampton. This season the Comets varsity in the regular season will face New Hampton, Osage, South Tama, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Independence (Homecoming), Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community, Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock. Comet softball advances at State

FORT DODGE —The Charles City High School softball team defeated Fairfield 5-4 today to advance in the state tournament. Their next game begins at 1:30 p.m. Thursday on Diamond 2 at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Shantel Van Hauen lifted the Comets to victory in the 7th inning with a two-strike single to center that scored Tayler Schmidt.  The Comets entered the Class 4A bracket as the No. 7 against No. 2 Fairfield. Comet softball tops No. 1 to go to State

Charles City softball not only is advancing to the State Tournament, the Comets did it by knocking off the top-ranked team. No. 14 Charles City defeated No. 1 Benton, 2-1, on Tuesday. “This team believed they could win and they did!” head coach Brian Bohlen said on Twitter. “I couldn’t be more proud.” Charles City’s first round game begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Buena Vista University against second-seeded Fairfield (33-9). District play for Iowa high school softball begins next week. Comet boys tee off Friday at sectionals in Decorah

DECORAH — The Charles City boys golf team will travel to Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah on Friday, May 12, for its Class 3A sectional meet. Golf begins at 10 a.m. Also competing in the meet are Decorah, Cresco, Waverly-Shell Rock, Oelwein, Independence, Union (LaPorte City) and West Delaware (Manchester).
