Charles City to play first round in Dubuque

Charles City travels to Dubuque to take on Wahlert Catholic in the first round of the Class 3A all-team playoffs on Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and admission is $6. As members of Pod 5, the winner moves to the second round Friday, Oct. 23, and plays Decorah, which has a first-round bye. Class 3A has 53 teams in the playoffs divided into 16 pods. Downing to coach Charles City High School girls basketball

NEWS RELEASE CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Tyler Downing, a 15-year coaching veteran, will be named the Charles City High School head girls basketball coach of his alma mater pending board approval by the Charles City Community School District Board of Education Monday evening. Mr. Downing is a social studies teacher with the Charles City High School. Charles City wrestlers take 2nd as a team at Girls State Tournament

WAVERLY — Charles City as a team took second place at the Iowa High School Girls Wrestling State Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock High School over the weekend The Comets had 128 points. Waverly-Shell Rock took first with 156.5. Marissa Gallup took 8th in the 106-pound weight class. She scored 12 points for the team. Kiki Connell took 6th at 120, scoring 18. Comet girls basketball wins, again

CHARLES CITY — The Comet girls basketball team had its highest scoring game of the season Friday night (Dec. 20), beating winless Oelwein, 60-19. The last time a Charles City girls basketball team scored 60 points was in the 2012-13 season. That team defeated Saint Ansgar 81-47 at home, and Oelwein 64-43, BCLUW 70-17 and Decorah 60-45, all on the road. The Comets finished the season 12-11 overall. CC wrestlers take 4th in 12-team tournament

PARKERSBURG — Charles City placed fourth in the 12-team Keith Vry Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 14. The top three teams were Don Bosco with 308.5 points, Crestwood, Cresco (207.5) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (163.5). Charles City has 157 points. Elliot Sinwell at 170 was the only Charles City wrestler to place 1st in his weight class. After a first round by, Sinnwell won by an 11-1 major decision over Meirick Huffman of Osage. CC girls basketball snaps 52-game losing streak

CHARLES CITY — The explosion of joy Monday night was worthy of a championship. The Comets bench leaped to embrace their five teammates on the floor as the buzzer sounded sending Charles City’s 55-20 home victory over Independence. The student section formed a cheering tunnel players passed through on the way to their locker room. This win was a long-time coming. It snapped a 52-game losing streak. Comet Soccer says goodbye to graduating founders; boasts high gpa’s

The Charles City High School Soccer Program held its second end of the season potluck on Thursday night. Some news of note from the banquet was the academic success of these students — 31 of 46 players have a GPA of 3.25 or greater, and 26 of those are above 3.5, according to head coach Brad McKenzie. “I knew we had an amazing team!” he tweeted. “Keep it up!” The potluck also was a chance to say goodbye to some seniors who helped launch this program.
