CHARLES CITY — After giving up a safety to open the game and going down 9-0 in the first quarter, the Charles City Comets offense churned out two touchdowns in the second quarter on the way to a 21-9 home victory Friday. Comet football falls 7-6 in Cresco; plus scores from around the state

CRESCO — Crestwood defeated Charles City by one extra point kick Friday night in Cresco, 7-6. The Cadets and Comets played in heavy rain, which contributed to multiple fumbles throughout the game. The first half was scoreless. Crestwood scored first in the second half on a run that ended with the Cadets recovering their own fumble in the end zone. The extra point kick narrowly fluttered through the cross bars. Charles City answered when Marcus Cranshaw sprinted around the left side for a 14-yard touchdown run. DES MOINES — Charles City’s lone qualifier for this year’s Drake Relays placed 22nd in the finals of the high school girls 3,000-meter run. Her time was 11 minutes, 9.85 seconds. Connell’s season best so far is 10:43.53. Ellie Friesen, of Crestwood, took first in the 3000 with a time of 9:50.44. Riceville junior Abby Marr placed 13th in girls high school shot put. DES MOINES — A pair of track and field standouts from the region will compete this week at “America’s Athletic Classic. Charles City’s Kiki Connell and Riceville’s Abby Marr have qualified for the 2018 Drake Relays in Des Moines. Connell, a freshman, qualified in the 3,000-meter run. Only 21 girls are accepted. Her time of 10:44.53 from a meet April 12 in Decorah is the 19th best in the state as of Monday, April 23. Bad weather steps aside; Comets, Huskies and Green Devils tee off

CHARLES CITY — Great Scott, area prep golfer has a meet Monday at Cedar Ridge Golf Course. Just last Wednesday, April 18, a record 6.6 inches of snow fell across Charles City and the Comets’ home course. On Monday, there was no snow, no sleet, no bitter cold, and not even flooding, fire or ice. Matter of fact, the temperature peaked at 68 degrees here as the golfers hit the greens. Tuesday was full of lessons to build on as the Comets prepare for their next game, which is Thursday against Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. CHARLES CITY —Test drive a Ford and raise $20 for Charles City school district athletics. Mike Molstead Motors is hosting the Ford Drive 4 UR School event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Comet soccer suits up for first time; season schedule announced

CHARLES CITY — Most of Charles City High School’s soccer players received their game uniforms Thursday, March 22 — which is a little more than a week out from the new program’s first game. This inaugural crew’s excitement manifested in selfies and the urging between teammates to “hurry up” getting jerseys on and joining group poses. WATERLOO — Charles City High School’s bowling teams took second on Monday at State in Class 1A.Thirty-one pins separated the Comet boys from the state champion West Delaware team. The final totals were West Delaware 3,179, Charles City 3,148.Bowling for Charles City were Hunter Brockney, Kaleb Ross, Cade Schmidt, Nathan Shultz, Dawson Solomon and Noah Reams.The Comet girls, with a final total of 2,786, took second to Louisa-Muscatine at 2,827. Wrestling State Tournament: Huskie wrestling for 3rd; 2 Comets aim for 7th

DES MOINES — The highest finish possible for area wrestlers at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament is third place. Brock Dietz of Nashua-Plainfield will wrestle for that on Saturday in the 106 pound bracket of Class 1A. In the opening round, Dietz defeated Jose Flores of Sibley by a 7-5 decision and then in the second Cael Cassady of MSM by fall at 3:56. Comet bowlers qualify for state tournament, which is Monday

Charles City High School bowlers are chasing state titles again. The tournament is Monday in Waterloo. Both the girls and boys teams have qualified for the 2018 state tournament that this year will begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 19, at Cadillac Lanes. Fire destroyed Des Moines’ Plaza Lanes, which has been the tournament home. Both Comet squads notched the second-highest total team scores for the Class 1A qualifiers. The boys put up a 3,151 pin total, just behind Knoxville’s 3,168.
