Down by 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd, Nashua-Plainfield had a runner on base and needed something to pop. That’s when Eli Kalainoff stepped up to the plate. Statistically he was just the right guy to drive in the tying run. Through the first six games of the season, the freshman outfielder was batting .529 with seven singles, two doubles and 6 RBIs. Coach Frost wins 500th dual as N-P sweeps home quad

Coach Al Frost sped past a milestone Tuesday night as his Nashua-Plainfield boys wrestling team swept its home quad. Frost collected his 500th wrestling dual victory and was congratulated by many former wrestlers, managers, cheerleaders and coaches. No. 500 came against Forest City, N-P’s final dual of the night. The Huskies won 66-8 Nashua-Plainfield also won duals against North Union 55-21 and Rockford 81-0. Nashua-Plainfield to play South Winneshiek in first-round of football playoffs

Nashua-Plainfield travels to Calmar on Friday to take on South Winneshiek in the first round of the Class A all-team playoffs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and admission is $6. As members of Pod 6, the winner moves on to the second round Friday, Oct. 23 to play the winner of Bishop Garrigan, Algona at Lake Mills Class A has 59 teams in the playoffs divided into 16 pods. Charles City to play first round in Dubuque

Charles City travels to Dubuque to take on Wahlert Catholic in the first round of the Class 3A all-team playoffs on Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and admission is $6. As members of Pod 5, the winner moves to the second round Friday, Oct. 23, and plays Decorah, which has a first-round bye. Class 3A has 53 teams in the playoffs divided into 16 pods. Downing to coach Charles City High School girls basketball

WAVERLY — Charles City as a team took second place at the Iowa High School Girls Wrestling State Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock High School over the weekend The Comets had 128 points. Comet girls basketball wins, again

CHARLES CITY — The Comet girls basketball team had its highest scoring game of the season Friday night (Dec. 20), beating winless Oelwein, 60-19. The last time a Charles City girls basketball team scored 60 points was in the 2012-13 season. That team defeated Saint Ansgar 81-47 at home, and Oelwein 64-43, BCLUW 70-17 and Decorah 60-45, all on the road. The Comets finished the season 12-11 overall. PARKERSBURG — Charles City placed fourth in the 12-team Keith Vry Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, Dec. 14. The top three teams were Don Bosco with 308.5 points, Crestwood, Cresco (207.5) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (163.5). Charles City has 157 points. NASHUA — Nashua-Plainfield ran away with first place on Saturday as it hosted a 12-team tournament. Three Huskies won their weight classes: freshman Garret Rinken (106), Kendrick Huck (113) and Jakob Whitinger (120). Seven Huskies placed second: Trey Nelson (126), McKade Munn (138), Shane Hillesheim (152), Cael Brunner (160), Derik Downing (170), Evan Kalainoff (182) and Dalton Asche (195). CHARLES CITY — The explosion of joy Monday night was worthy of a championship. The Comets bench leaped to embrace their five teammates on the floor as the buzzer sounded sending Charles City’s 55-20 home victory over Independence.
