‘Polite’ Charles City man gets probation over gun possession as a felon

Michael O’Shea Anderson, Jr., 38, of Charles City, pleaded guilty in Chickasaw County District Court on Oct. 18 to one count of possession of a firearm as a felon. On Oct. 19 he received two years of probation on a suspended sentenced of to up to five years in prison. A $1,025 fine plus $153.75 surcharge were also suspended. He had been arrested following a July 24 traffic stop in Ionia. Sumner man sent to prison for sexual abuse in Chickasaw and Bremer Counties

After pleading guilty in two sexual abuse cases, Michael Adam Koch, 21, of Sumner, will serve up to 10 years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, although he has the possibility of parole. In Chickasaw County District Court, Koch pleaded guilty on Aug. 9 to lascivious acts with a child (a Class C felony) and was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. A $1,370 fine and surcharge were suspended, and second sex crime charge was dismissed, in accordance with the plea agreement reached with prosecution. The Oelwein boys cross country team is headed to State after winning the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday at Hickory Grove Golf Course in Oelwein. The Huskies place first as a team with 63 points Denver was second with 66. The Huskies also qualified four individuals for the State Meet, which will be next week in Fort Dodge. Nashua-Plainfield’s Kadence Huck just keeps getting faster — 27.3 seconds faster this time around. The sophomore finished second at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Central Springs on Thursday with a Huskies school record of 19:16.7. The previous best, which she set at the Top of Iowa Conference meet a week earlier was 19:44. Two Comets have qualified for the State Cross Country Meet: Sophomores Xander Graeser and Nick Williams. Charles City’s boys and girls teams traveled to Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester for a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet Wednesday afternoon. West Central opened the 2022 volleyball postseason with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-12 and 25-21) victory at home over Kee on Monday. That earned the Blue Devils a shot at Don Bosco tonight in Gilbertsville. The Kee Hawks finished the season with a 1-23 record, but the Dons (26-12) had wrapped up their 25-12 regular season ranked 8th in Class 1A. Buchanan County prosecutor reaches plea deal to send Fairbank man to prison

INDEPENDENCE — The Buchanan County Attorney’s Office has reached a plea agreement with Tyler Alan Welter, 27, of Fairbank, that will mark him as a sexual predator of children and send him to prison. Welter agreed today to plead guilty to two Class C felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, two Class C felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and three Class D felony counts of enticing a minor. Oelwein man charged with drug crimes

WEST UNION — Estaban Ricardo Carrasco Jr., 21, of Oelwein, is charged with four controlled substance violations. According to court documents, the Oelwein Police Department conducted controlled buys of illegal drugs on Aug. 7 and Aug. 16. Both times, Carrasco arrived in a red in Cadillac registered to his father. On Aug. 7, he allegedly delivered 1.018 grams of marijuana and 2.285 grams of cocaine. On Aug.16, he allegedly delivered 3.319 grams of cocaine and 9.985 grams of methamphetamine. Oelwein Police arrested Carrasco on Oct. 11 on a warrant. He made his initial court appearance on Oct. 12.
