7 at 7 a.m, for Charles City (Oct. 17): Upcoming orchestra concert, Halloween events and more local news

Good morning, Charles City area readers. Here’s some local news and notes to get your week started.

1. Windy today — Today will be mostly sunny, with a high near 38. Breezy, with a northwest wind 14 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 20. North wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. (Extended Forecast)

2. CCHS orchestra in concert in costume on Tuesday — The Charles City High School orchestra’s Tuesday, Oct. 18, concert featuring Wartburg College’s Kammerstreicher will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Expect orchestra members to show up in their Halloween costumes. There will also be punch, baked goods for sale and candy. Admission is $5 for adults. Students get in free.

3. Comets aim on Wednesday to qualify for Class 3A cross country state meet — The Comets will travel to Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester on Wednesday, Oct. 19, for a Class 3A state qualifying meet. The girls race begins at 4 p.m., the boys at 4:30 p.m.

The first three teams, plus the first 15 individual place winners will qualify for the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The other teams at the meet will be Clear Creek-Amana, Clear Lake, Decorah, Hampton-Dumont, Independence, Marion, Solon, Vinton-Shellsburg, Wahlert Catholic (Dubuque), Waverly-Shell Rock, West Delaware (Manchester), and Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Spectators admission is $5 per car.

4. HALLOWEEN FUN

  • Spookwalk 2022, 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, Riverside Trail, Charles City. Free admission.
  • Trunk or Treat, 6-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31, The Bridge Church, 913 S. Main St., Charles City. Fun, games and prizes. Free admission.

6. PROM DECISION — CCHS students have chosen “Starry Night” as this school year’s prom theme. The colors will be blue, gold and silver.

7. BUY POPCORN TO SUPPORT CCHS COUNCIL — The Comet Council of Charles City High School is selling flavored popcorn as a fundraiser to support student activities. The Jolly Time Koated Kernels are available in snack bag size for $8 apiece and family bag size for $20 apiece. The flavors available are cheddar cheese, white cheddar, cheddar jalapeño, Sioux City 50-50 (caramel and white cheddar), cinnamon roll, chocolate drizzled caramel, sea salt caramel and birthday cake. Place your order with any Comet Council member. Orders will be delivered by council members prior to fall break.
