FRIDAY UPDATE: Luft wins 3rd State title

Three-time State champion. Charles City senior Lily Luft (40-0) won the 130-pound title Friday night with a 9-0 major decision over Chloe Sanders (47-5), a ninth-grader from Vinton-Shellsburg who was seeded No. 2. Luft was the top seed. Luft was dominant throughout the two-day IGHSAU Championships in Coralville. She had two first period pins and three major decisions. Including Luft, five Comets qualified for State, but four were finished on Thursday. Ava Thompson and Leah Stewart started strong by securing first match pins. Vance’s State Tournament run ends

Nashua-Plainfield sophomore Kylie Vance’s run at the State Girls Wrestling Championships ended after two matches to higher seeded wrestlers. Vance (16-10), who was seeded 25th, lost by fall in 56 seconds to Spencer junior Kalee Nachtigal (38-6), who was seeded 8th, in their first round 190-pound match at Xtreme in Coralville. In her first match in the Consolation bracket, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley ninth-grader Kaylee De Jong (13-6), who was seeded 24th, defeated Vance by fall late in the second period. Sumner-Fredericksburg junior Hillary Trainor (40-5) placed fourth in the 105 weight class at the IGHSAU State Wrestling Championships. She opened tournament at Xtreme Arena in Coralville on Thursday by winning four straight matches . Trainor pinned West Marshall junior Brooklynn Rudkin (13-12) in 58 seconds. Trainor was seeded 3rd. Rudkin was seeded 29th. Trainor then won by a 7-1 decision over Mount Pleasant senior Ella McNamee (24-4) in the second round. She was seeded 13th. Area girls qualify for State Wrestling Tournament

Oelwein sophomore Ryley Hartman (31-9) is the Region 7 champion of the 110-pound weight class. She pinned junior Emma Hall of the North Central Trailblazers (20-6) at 1:59 of the title match on Friday at Luther College in Decorah. She and girls from North Fayette Valley, Tripoli and Sumner-Fredericksburg now are headed to the State Wrestling Tournament that will be Feb. 2-3 at Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The Nashua-Plainfield girls wrestling team competed Monday at a 19-team tournament in Osage. Huskies Sara Babu and Ryan Reams place 4th and 7th, respectively, in their weight classes. At 100, Sara Babu went 2-2 and received a bye. She finished 4th. She pinned Annabelle Rohret of Cedar Falls at 5:45 and won a 15-11 decision over Hailey Peterson of Perry. The Nashua-Plainfield girls wrestling team won one team dual — against MFL MarMac — at the Saint Ansgar quad on Tuesday. Most of the matches in each dual were forfeited for lack of opponent. N-P’s Elexa O’Neill had the most productive night by notching two pins. One was over North Central’s Lillian Holtan in 59 seconds in the 120 weight class and the other over MFL MarMac’s Melody Grimm at 3:01 in the 125 class. Comets win 2 golds, 1 silver at Donnybrook tournament

Charles City’s Destiny Kolheim and Lily Luft won gold and Liz Oleson took silver Friday night at an invitation only tournament in Coralville. Ten members of the Comets girls wrestling team competed in the Dan Gable Donnybrook held Thursday and Friday at Xtreme Arena. It featured at least 24 of the best girls wrestling teams in the Midwest, according to the Charles City Wrestling Facebook page. Charles City as a team had 26 wins, 16 losses and placed 9th. The Nashua-Plainfield girls wrestling team traveled to Elkader on Monday and brought home three individual first-place finishes from the Central Scramble tournament. Ryan Reams captured first in the 115C weight class by pinning New Hampton’s Kaylee Wertz in 49 seconds, teammate Lillie Caster at 2:00 and Denver’s Jules Neubauer in 52 seconds.
