Cresco man drowns in New Hampton

The drowning death of a 52-year-old Cresco man on Monday in New Hampton was accidental, said Chickasaw County Sheriff Randy Shawver. At 1:40 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that someone was drowning at the Airport Lake Park, 2047 190th Street, New Hampton. Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene immediately and initiated a water rescue, Shawver said. At 5:56 p.m., divers, from Iowa Underwater Search and Rescue, recovered the body of Alvaro Valdivia Barranco. N-P at State Track, Day 3: Huck wins 800m title; hurdle team 7th

Nashua-Plainfield’s third day at the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships began with another record-breaking performance. Huskies sophomore Kadence Huck won the Class 1A girls 800m run with a personal best time of 2:11.75, another school record. Later, Huck was 2nd in the 1500m run with a time of 4:35.44. Cal-Wheatland sophomore Noelle Steines took first with a state record time of 4:35.43. The boys shuttle hurdle relay team of Kaden Wilken, Aiden Lamborn, Bo Harrington and Titus Evans finished 7th with a time of 1:02.13. Canadian wildfire smoke fouls Iowa air

IOWA DNR NEWS RELEASE DES MOINES – Yesterday an approaching cold front pulled smoke from Canadian wildfires down to ground level, and areas of unhealthy, very unhealthy, and hazardous air quality were measured across much of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. Twenty-four hour averages of fine particulate levels that EPA considers unhealthy for sensitive groups were also measured at Emmetsburg, Iowa, yesterday. Cedar River (above Nashua) Water clarity is muddy with high flows. Water levels are falling, but up about 3 feet. Water temperatures are on the rise with warmer weather.  Channel Catfish – Good: Try a dead chub or stink baits fished in slack water areas. Smallmouth Bass – Slow: Try fishing eddies and current breaks. Walleye – Slow: Use a jig tipped with a minnow or worm below dams. Try using a 3-way with enough weight to keep the weight on the bottom. Decorah District Streams Area streams are in good condition. All stocked streams are announced at least once a month. Nashua-Plainfield sophomore Kadence Huck captured the Class 1A state title in the girls 400m dash today at the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. She finished with a personal best time of 55.94. Today is the first day of the state track meet, which goes through Saturday.
