CC girls drop home game to Indee

Independence took a 15-3 lead in the first quarter of Monday’s girls basketball game in Charles City on the way to a 64-36 win. The Comets outscored the Mustangs 15-14 in the second quarter, but Independence dominated the second half. Seniors Delaney Ruzicka and Ava Ellis each scored 12 points to lead the Comets. Ellis netted 7 points at the free throw line. Ruzicka led Charles City with 10 rebounds. The Comets are now 0-2. Independence is 1-0. Floyd County Board to consider more funding for communications position

The Floyd County Board of Supervisors on Monday plans to review and possibly vote on a communications and marketing partnership with the Charles City school district, municipal government and Area Development Corporation. The board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in the Floyd County Courthouse Assembly Room. At the board’s Oct. 17 meeting, city and school district officials urged the county to join a 28E agreement to fund a community marketing and promotion liaison position. The new arrangement would replace lost funding that supports a Charles City Public Access Network position. By the Iowa DNR The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comment on the DNR’s intent to withdraw the Cedar River watershed nitrate total maximum daily load (TMDL). TMDLs include analyses and methods for improving water quality for water bodies on the state’s Clean Water Act 303d impaired waters list. In 2006, the DNR finalized a TMDL for nitrate in the Cedar River. The DNR created the Cedar River TMDL due to the nitrate impairment in the segment of the Cedar River which Cedar Rapids uses as a source for municipal drinking water. Oelwein Council ponders $500,000 contribution for events center

The question for city staff was, how can the city of Oelwein contribute $500,000 toward turning an empty downtown building into an events center? City Administrator Dylan Mulfinger presented a five-year draft plan to the City Council ahead of its workshop meeting on Tuesday to try and answer that. It would redirect tax money currently used for such things as economic development, housing improvement efforts, library accreditation and more. It also would ask the Oelwein Community Schools to forego $140,000 over four years. 2. HOMECOMING WEEK HAS BEGUN: Charles City High School students celebrated the beginning of Homecoming Week on Sunday evening with a bonfire at the Elks Lodge. Thousands of bicyclists will be coming to Charles City this summer as the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa will take a northern route. Here is the announcement from organizers: The 2022 Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, which will take place from July 23 to 30, will start in Sergeant Bluff and end in Lansing. CHARLES CITY — Citing student safety as the top priority, school officials announced on Wednesday that the Charles City football program will be shut down for the next two weeks because of two COVID-19 infections among the players with the possibility of more. The Comets were scheduled to host Union-La Porte City this Friday and Western Dubuque next week. They traveled to New Hampton last Friday. The Chickasaws won 15-8.
