Charles City morning update: Trash rate hike in the works, downtown business plans facelift (Thursday, Sept. 15)

1. WEATHER: Today will be Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Tonight there is a 20% chance of showers after 1 a.m. otherwise it will be Partly cloudy, with a low around 62 with continued wind gusts. (More details)

2. GOV’T — The city of Charles City is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of City Engineer. Click here to learn more.

3. DOWNTOWN — The Prichard Law Office is planning a bit of a facelift. The downtown business of 13 years intends to replace its front awning and add one to the back. The estimated cost is around $5,300. Prichard has applied for a Charles City Main Street Facade Improvement Program grant of $2,650.80.

4. MORE EXPENSIVE TRASH — Jendro Sanitation Services Inc. has asked the city to approve a rate increase based on last year’s consumer price index increase of 7.4%. A rate change could come as early as the next City Council meeting, meaning the new rate would go into effect Oct. 1 and would be reflected in the November utility bills.

5. SPORTS — As of Wednesday, Charles City volleyball player Anya Ruzicka was second in the Northeast Iowa Conference in assists with 208. Ava Ellis was third in kills with 85. Keeley Collins and Jayden Van Horn are tied for second in solo blocks with 13. (NEIC leaderboard)
