News Release from the IHSAA BOONE, Iowa – An amendment to the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Articles of Incorporation to include a socioeconomic factor into football classifications has advanced to a vote of the membership to begin next week. A recommendation from the IHSAA’s classification committee last week to adopt a classification model similar to one currently used by the Minnesota State High School League – reducing 40 percent of a school’s free or reduced lunch count from their annual enrollment to determine their final classification number – was approved by the Board of Control on Monday. 2 seriously hurt in head-on crash near Sumner
Two people were hospitalized this morning (Dec. 5) after the pickup they were in crashed head-on with a semitrailer just northeast of Sumner. At 10:11 a.m. the Fayette County dispatch took a 911 call of a two-vehicle accident on County Road V-68 between 170th and 165th Streets. A 2016 Chevrolet pickup had lost control on the icy roadway, crossed the center line and was hit head-on by a semitrailer traveling south, responding deputies and the Iowa State Patrol discovered, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Arlington man charged in sex abuse case
After a month-long investigation, charges have been filed against a 44-year-old Arlington man in Fayette County District Court. Hiema Griffith is charged with second-degree sex abuse, a Class B Felony. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Griffith is accused of sexually abusing a minor female on several occasions over the last year. After the investigation was completed, an arrest warrant was issued on Griffith. He was arrested at a residence in Cedar Rapids by the Cedar Rapids Police Department. Stewart wins Grinch title
Diana Stewart worked for it. She accepted the Grinch title Friday night at Plaza Park, bringing the annual fundraiser for the Oelwein Kitchen Cabinet food pantry to an end. One dollar equaled one vote for one of five Grinch candidates. People cast votes by dropping off donations at locations affiliated with each candidate. Stewart’s was Oelwein Dollar Fresh. N-P boys climb out of 14-point hole to win opener
Their season started out a bit rough, a 14-point deficit after one quarter kind of rough. Then, Nashua-Plainfield’s boys basketball team flipped the story, outscoring Northwood-Kensett cutting their lead to 8 at the half, 33-25. Comets win 2 golds, 1 silver at Donnybrook tournament
Charles City’s Destiny Kolheim and Lily Luft won gold and Liz Oleson took silver Friday night at an invitation only tournament in Coralville. Ten members of the Comets girls wrestling team competed in the Dan Gable Donnybrook held Thursday and Friday at Xtreme Arena. It featured at least 24 of the best girls wrestling teams in the Midwest, according to the Charles City Wrestling Facebook page. Charles City as a team had 26 wins, 16 losses and placed 9th. The Nashua-Plainfield boys wrestling team hit the road Thursday night and picked up three dual victories in Garner. Deputies make domestic abuse arrests over holiday week
On Nov. 24 at 2:14 a.m., Fayette CountySheriff’s deputies were called to 320 Olive Street in Westgate in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon investigating, they arrested Jeffrey William Arthur, 54, of Westgate on the charges of domestic abuse assault while displaying a dangerous weapon (aggravated misdemeanor) and obstruction of an emergency communications (simple misdemeanor). He was transported to the Fayette County Jail. On Nov. 25, at 3:57 a.m., deputies were called to 106 Mechanic Street in Fayette in reference to a domestic disturbance. PARKERSBURG — Aplington-Parkersburg made 13 3-pointers as they won 60-25 over the visiting Oelwein girls basketball team. Alabama man charged in New Hampton hotel sex abuse case
An Alabama man is in Chickasaw County jail accused of sexually abusing a woman in June at a New Hampton hotel. Quenton O’Neal Sanders, 32, of Marion, Alabama, is charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony, in Chickasaw County District Court. He is accused of performing a sex act on a woman against her will around 9 a.m. June 11 at a hotel in New Hampton.
