Alabama man charged in New Hampton hotel sex abuse case

An Alabama man is in Chickasaw County jail accused of sexually abusing a woman in June at a New Hampton hotel.

Quenton O’Neal Sanders, 32, of Marion, Alabama, is charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony, in Chickasaw County District Court.

He is accused of performing a sex act on a woman against her will around 9 a.m. June 11 at a hotel in New Hampton. According to the criminal complaint, the woman was staying at the hotel with a friend, who left their room when they were sleeping. Then, the woman awoke to Sanders committing the act and pushed him off.

He allegedly offered her money to not go to the police, the complaint says.

The complaint was filed Aug. 25, and authorities had not been able to make contact with Sanders by then. He was arrested on a warrant on Nov. 21 in Lee County.

He made his initial appearance in court on Nov. 22 and Magistrate Christine B. Skilton set bail at $10,000 cash or surety.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 13.

He has been approved for a court-appointed attorney at state expense.

According to his application for counsel, he works 50 to 60 hours a week at a job that pays $60,000 annually, supports two children and pays two mortgages.
