2 seriously hurt in head-on crash near Sumner

Two people were hospitalized this morning (Dec. 5) after the pickup they were in crashed head-on with a semitrailer just northeast of Sumner. At 10:11 a.m. the Fayette County dispatch took a 911 call of a two-vehicle accident on County Road V-68 between 170th and 165th Streets. A 2016 Chevrolet pickup had lost control on the icy roadway, crossed the center line and was hit head-on by a semitrailer traveling south, responding deputies and the Iowa State Patrol discovered, according to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Arlington man charged in sex abuse case

After a month-long investigation, charges have been filed against a 44-year-old Arlington man in Fayette County District Court. Hiema Griffith is charged with second-degree sex abuse, a Class B Felony. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Griffith is accused of sexually abusing a minor female on several occasions over the last year. After the investigation was completed, an arrest warrant was issued on Griffith. He was arrested at a residence in Cedar Rapids by the Cedar Rapids Police Department. Stewart wins Grinch title

Diana Stewart worked for it. She accepted the Grinch title Friday night at Plaza Park, bringing the annual fundraiser for the Oelwein Kitchen Cabinet food pantry to an end. One dollar equaled one vote for one of five Grinch candidates. People cast votes by dropping off donations at locations affiliated with each candidate. Stewart’s was Oelwein Dollar Fresh. Deputies make domestic abuse arrests over holiday week

On Nov. 24 at 2:14 a.m., Fayette CountySheriff’s deputies were called to 320 Olive Street in Westgate in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon investigating, they arrested Jeffrey William Arthur, 54, of Westgate on the charges of domestic abuse assault while displaying a dangerous weapon (aggravated misdemeanor) and obstruction of an emergency communications (simple misdemeanor). He was transported to the Fayette County Jail.   On Nov. 25, at 3:57 a.m., deputies were called to 106 Mechanic Street in Fayette in reference to a domestic disturbance. Aplington-Parkersburg stops Oelwein girls

PARKERSBURG — Aplington-Parkersburg made 13 3-pointers as they won 60-25 over the visiting Oelwein girls basketball team. A-P’s Ellen Waller sank six of those 3-pointers as she put up 21 points to lead all scorers. Ninth-grader McKinzie See led Oelwein with 16 points. The Falcons improved to 2-0. The Huskies are now 1-1. They opened the season with a 76-26 home win over Postville before the Thanksgiving break UP NEXT : Oelwein will travel to La Porte City to take on Union (1-0). DNR to host virtual meeting on chronic wasting disease Nov. 29

Iowa DNR News Release The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is hosting a virtual public meeting on chronic wasting disease on Nov. 29, from 7-8 p.m. Staff will provide an update on the science of the disease, its status in Iowa, and current management efforts. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and staff will answer as many as time allows. Pair rescued from rolled pickup Thanksgiving morning

After a rollover crash south of Elgin on Thursday, Nov. 24, occupants of the pickup were trapped inside. The Elgin Fire Department helped get them out. The pair was transported to Palmer Gunderson Hospital in West Union with minor injuries. At 4:47 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Fayette County deputies were called to the 19,000 block of Cedar Road because of a single vehicle rollover accident. The driver, a 25-year-old Elgin woman, had lost control of 2005 Chevrolet Silverado because of weather coy when traveling southbound. Ossian man struck and killed on road north of West Union

An Ossian man watching his car being pulled out of a ditch was struck and killed Monday night north of West Union. The incident is under investigation. Guadalupe Salgado Bernal, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 27000 block of Lincoln Road. According to a Fayette County Sheriff’s Office news release it received a report at 6:28 p.m. Nov. 21, about an SUV stoking a pedestrian on Lincoln Road north of West Union. The NICL-East volleyball Coach of the Year, Wapsie Valley’s Austin Shepherd, has also been recognized by a national coaching association. The American Volleyball Coaches Association chose Shepherd as a 2022 Class of 30 Under 30 High School Award recipient. The program was established in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport, and was expanded in 2016 to include a category for high school coaches. Deputies arrest Maynard man on gun charge, Randalia woman over drugs

Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies arrest a Maynard man and a Randalia woman on felony charges over the weekend in separate incidents. On Friday, Nov. 18, a deputy arrested Dalton Bunn, 24, of Maynard on a valid Clayton County arrest warrant for charge of felon in possession of a firearm. Bunn was transported to the Fayette County jail and later transported to Clayton County Jail. On Sunday, Nov. 20,a deputy initiated a traffic stop at 12:49 a.m. on 2000 Chevrolet S20 truck for a traffic infraction. More weather and deer-related crashes in Fayette County

Weather contributed to crashes in rural parts of Fayette County last week, and a deer caused one this morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office. On Friday, Nov. 18, just before 6 a.m., a white Ford Ranger was traveling west on Golden Road when due to weather conditions the vehicle lost control, crossed the center line, rolled over into the ditch and came to rest on its side. No injuries were reported and vehicle was towed from the scene. Snow was falling at the time of the crash. The accident remains under investigation. Oelwein and West Union men sent to prison over drug crimes

Men from Oelwein and West Union were sent to prison this week after pleading guilty to felony drug charges in separate cases in Fayette County District Court. Here are some recently concluded felony cases: Thomas Daniel Wilds, 28, of Oelwein, pleaded guilty Nov. 15 to the Class D felonies of third-offense possession of methamphetamine and third-offense possession of marijuana and was sentenced by District Court Judge John Sullivan to a pair of concurrent prison terms of up to five years. Four other counts were dismissed. Fines and surcharges, which exceeded $2,000 total, were suspended.
