West Central volleyball postseason ends 1-1

West Central opened the 2022 volleyball postseason with a 3-0 (25-6, 25-12 and 25-21) victory at home over Kee on Monday. That earned the Blue Devils a shot at Don Bosco tonight in Gilbertsville. The Kee Hawks finished the season with a 1-23 record, but the Dons (26-12) had wrapped up their 25-12 regular season ranked 8th in Class 1A. Don Bosco swept West Central 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16), capping the Blue Devils season record at 8-14. Buchanan County prosecutor reaches plea deal to send Fairbank man to prison

INDEPENDENCE — The Buchanan County Attorney’s Office has reached a plea agreement with Tyler Alan Welter, 27, of Fairbank, that will mark him as a sexual predator of children and send him to prison. Welter agreed today to plead guilty to two Class C felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, two Class C felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and three Class D felony counts of enticing a minor. Six additional counts will be dismissed. Oelwein man charged with drug crimes

WEST UNION — Estaban Ricardo Carrasco Jr., 21, of Oelwein, is charged with four controlled substance violations. According to court documents, the Oelwein Police Department conducted controlled buys of illegal drugs on Aug. 7 and Aug. 16. Both times, Carrasco arrived in a red in Cadillac registered to his father. On Aug. 7, he allegedly delivered 1.018 grams of marijuana and 2.285 grams of cocaine. On Aug.16, he allegedly delivered 3.319 grams of cocaine and 9.985 grams of methamphetamine. Oelwein Police arrested Carrasco on Oct. 11 on a warrant. He made his initial court appearance on Oct. 12. Wapsie Valley to host St. Ansgar in playoff opener on Friday

Wapsie Valley (6-2) will host Saint Ansgar (5-3) in the first round of the Class A football playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21. The teams shared one common opponent this season North Tama. The Warriors won their game 41-0. Saint Ansgar won 42-0. Wapsie Valley’s senior quarterback Casey O’Donnell has thrown for 856 yards so far this season with 16 touchdowns against five interceptions. He’s rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown. The top rusher this season for the Warriors is senior Braden Knight with 831 yards and nine touchdowns. Sydney’s Bridal is moving to Oelwein. Sieck wins Tri-Rivers Conference championship

Starmont-West Central senior Charlie Sieck captured first place in the boys varsity 5K race on Tuesday at the Tri-Rivers Conference Meet hosted by North Linn. His time of 16:27 was 34 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. The team title went to North Linn with 67 points, followed by Maquoketa Valley (2nd, 96), Calumus Wheatland (3rd, 102), Starmont-West Central (4th, 110), East Buchanan (5th, 112), Springville (6th, 120), Alburnett (7th, 139), Prince of Peace (8th, 166), North Cedar (9th, 189), Marquette Catholic (10th, 253), and Edgewood-Colesburg (11th, 293). LA PORTE CITY — Hillary Trainor gave Sumner-Fredericksburg another championship title today. The junior won the varsity girls 5K at the North Iowa Cedar League conference meet at the La Porte City Golf Course with a time of 19:19.6. Jesup sophomore MacKenzie Wilson was second with a time of 19:21.4. Oelwein boys win cross country conference meet

LA PORTE CITY — The Oelwein boys cross country team continues is season on fire, despite the chilly fall winds on Thursday. The Huskies captured the team title at the North Iowa Cedar League’s conference meet at the La Porte City Golf Course. Oelwein sophomore Conall Sauser and senior Ray Gearhart finished second and third with times of 16.38.5 and 16:49.12, respectively. For Gearhart, it was his personal best time. West Central volleyball pushed Turkey Valley to five sets Tuesday night before the Trojans finally banked their seventh consecutive win. Oelwein, Monticello, Orange City, Pella, and Shenandoah are host sites this year for the Class 2A boys and girls cross country IHSAA and IGHSAU state qualifying meets, which all will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20. In the week 11 rankings released Tuesday by IATC, the Oelwein boys cross country team is seventh in Class 2A. Among Class 2A girls teams, Sumner-Fredericksburg is 16th and Jesup is 19th. Wapsie Valley is 14th in girls Class 1A. Individually, Starmont-West Central’s Charlie Sieck is 5th among Class 2A boys. Oelwein’s Conall Sauser is 13th and Ray Gearhart is 18th.
