Charles City home destroyed by fire Sunday night

Members of a Charles City family escaped injury when their home caught fire in the early morning hours on Sunday. Two adults were home at the time and they evacuated safely after being awakened by smoke detectors, said Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple. ‘Polite’ Charles City man gets probation over gun possession as a felon

Michael O’Shea Anderson, Jr., 38, of Charles City, pleaded guilty in Chickasaw County District Court on Oct. 18 to one count of possession of a firearm as a felon. On Oct. 19 he received two years of probation on a suspended sentenced of to up to five years in prison. A $1,025 fine plus $153.75 surcharge were also suspended. He had been arrested following a July 24 traffic stop in Ionia. Two Comets have qualified for the State Cross Country Meet: Sophomores Xander Graeser and Nick Williams. Charles City’s boys and girls teams traveled to Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester for a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet Wednesday afternoon. The top three teams and top 15 individual finishers from each race qualifed for the Saturday, Oct. 29, State Meet in Fort Dodge. Graeser finished 9th with a time of 16:52.60. By the Iowa DNR The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comment on the DNR’s intent to withdraw the Cedar River watershed nitrate total maximum daily load (TMDL). TMDLs include analyses and methods for improving water quality for water bodies on the state’s Clean Water Act 303d impaired waters list. In 2006, the DNR finalized a TMDL for nitrate in the Cedar River. CC man accused of sexual abuse back in jail on drug charges

A 41-year-old Charles City man awaiting trial on one count of second-degree sexual abuse is back in jail after allegedly violating his pre trial release for a second time. Cory Lee Poyner is scheduled for trial Oct. 25, in Floyd County District Court. He is accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl multiple times while living in her hom from November 2021 to January 2022. Poyner’s first pretrial violation was reported by probation officials when he was out on bail that he posted April 8 in the abuse case. Duck season begins Oct. 1 in Iowa’s north zone

BY THE IOWA DNR Waterfowlers have waited all year for this: for the next three weekends in Iowa, there will be an opening day for duck and goose hunting. The north zone opens on Oct. 1, the central zone opens on Oct. 8 and the south zone opens on Oct. 15. Each zone is open seven days, then close for seven days, before re-opening. Iowa DNR to host public meetings on Chronic Wasting Disease

By the IOWA DNR The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans to host three meetings in October to provide an update to the public on chronic wasting disease surveillance and management efforts. Meetings are scheduled for: Tissue samples collected during the 2021-2022 surveillance season resulted in deer testing positive in both Fremont and Greene counties – the first time deer tested positive for the always fatal disease in these counties.
