CC girls basketball snaps 52-game losing streak

CHARLES CITY — The explosion of joy Monday night was worthy of a championship. The Comets bench leaped to embrace their five teammates on the floor as the buzzer sounded sending Charles City’s 55-20 home victory over Independence. The student section formed a cheering tunnel players passed through on the way to their locker room. This win was a long-time coming. It snapped a 52-game losing streak. Wine and live music Nov. 15 will help rebuild Floyd County Fairgrounds

CHARLES CITY — An evening of wine, appetizers and live music from the Juni West band on Friday, Nov. 15, will help rebuilt the Floyd County Fairgrounds, which was damaged over the summer by a tornado. DNR investigates Tama County fish kill

IOWA DNR VINING—DNR staff are investigating a manure spill that resulted in a fish kill on Wolf Creek about 2 miles northwest of Vining in Tama County. A manure applicator for Mayo Farm Inc. reported Thursday morning that a drag hose leaked about 2,600 gallons of manure during land application. The applicator built a berm to dam up the spilled manure, but estimates that up to 500 gallons reached the creek. DNR staff saw live fish at the site Thursday, but found some dead fish in the same area — about 1 to 1.5 miles downstream — this morning. DNR now accepting Derelict Building applications

Iowa DNR DES MOINES – The next round of funding for the 2020 Derelict Building Grant Program is open for applications through Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. The grant program was instituted by state legislation to help rural communities with populations of 5,000 or less to deconstruct or renovate abandoned commercial and public structures. The program emphasizes reuse and recycling of building items, helps improve street appearance and commercial development, and alleviates the environmental concern these buildings can pose. Financial assistance includes asbestos removal, building deconstruction and renovation, and other environmental services. Commercial Ag Weed, Insect, Plant Disease Course Set for Nov. 20

News Release   Floyd County Extension will offer the Commercial Ag Weed, Insect and Plant Disease Management Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators Wednesday, November 20, 2019. The program will be shown at locations across Iowa through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).   The local attendance site is at the Floyd County Extension Office, 112 N Main St., Charles City. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the course runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The registration fee is $35.
