N-P wrestlers finish 5th and 8th; Rinkens go for State titles tonight

Three of Nashua-Plainfield’s wrestlers finished in the top eight of their weight classes during Saturday’s Class 1A morning session at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. Two more will chase championships this evening.

Sophomore Nic Brase (106) placed fifth, junior Titus Evans (170) took fifth, and senior Kendrick Huck (132) finished eighth.

At tonight’s championship session that begins at 5:15 p.m., sophomore Jayden Rinken (46-2), seeded no. 1 at 106, will face no. 6 Mason Shirk (47-3), a freshman at Wilton.

Senior Garrett Rinken (50-0), no. 1 at 126, will face no. 6 Dawson Schmit (40-7), a senior at Wapsie Valley, in the championship match.

In this morning’s action:

• Brase (43-8), who was seeded no. 7 at 113, win the fifth-place match by a 4-2 decision over Gage Samo (18-4), a sophomore at WACO, Wayland. Brase finished with a 3-1 tournament record and scored 12 team points.

• Evans (30-8) wrestled two matches. In his first, no 5. Jacob Thiry (34-12), a senior at Don Bosco, won an 11-8 decision over him in a 170 consolation semifinal. Evans, who was seeded no. 6, then won the fifth-place match by defeating no. 4 Ryan Stiles (36-8), a junior at Earlham, by a 10-6 decision.

Evans scored 13 points for the team and posted a 3-2 tournament record.

• Huck (35-12) finished with a 3-3 tournament record and scoring 8 team points. In the 132 seventh-place match, no. 9 Carson Seuntjens (48-6), a senior at Kingsley-Pierson) won by fall in 33 seconds over Huck, who was seeded no. 7.
