N-P boys climb out of 14-point hole to win opener

Their season started out a bit rough, a 14-point deficit after one quarter kind of rough. Then, Nashua-Plainfield’s boys basketball team flipped the story, outscoring Northwood-Kensett cutting their lead to 8 at the half, 33-25. The Huskies went on win their season opener 60-57 Friday night on the road. Statistics were not immediately available. This story will be updated when they are. Comets win 2 golds, 1 silver at Donnybrook tournament

Charles City’s Destiny Kolheim and Lily Luft won gold and Liz Oleson took silver Friday night at an invitation only tournament in Coralville. Ten members of the Comets girls wrestling team competed in the Dan Gable Donnybrook held Thursday and Friday at Xtreme Arena. It featured at least 24 of the best girls wrestling teams in the Midwest, according to the Charles City Wrestling Facebook page. Charles City as a team had 26 wins, 16 losses and placed 9th. N-P boys wrestling sweeps season opener

The Nashua-Plainfield boys wrestling team hit the road Thursday night and picked up three dual victories in Garner. The Huskies beat Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 68-12, Newman Catholic 75-3 and Lake Mills 56-19. N-P’s Kendrick Huck (132) had three pins at the quad. Altogether, the Huskies scored 18 pins. Aplington-Parkersburg stops Oelwein girls

PARKERSBURG — Aplington-Parkersburg made 13 3-pointers as they won 60-25 over the visiting Oelwein girls basketball team. A-P’s Ellen Waller sank six of those 3-pointers as she put up 21 points to lead all scorers. Ninth-grader McKinzie See led Oelwein with 16 points. The Falcons improved to 2-0. The Huskies are now 1-1. They opened the season with a 76-26 home win over Postville before the Thanksgiving break UP NEXT : Oelwein will travel to La Porte City to take on Union (1-0). CC girls drop home game to Indee

Independence took a 15-3 lead in the first quarter of Monday’s girls basketball game in Charles City on the way to a 64-36 win. The Comets outscored the Mustangs 15-14 in the second quarter, but Independence dominated the second half. Seniors Delaney Ruzicka and Ava Ellis each scored 12 points to lead the Comets. Ellis netted 7 points at the free throw line. Ruzicka led Charles City with 10 rebounds. The Comets are now 0-2. Independence is 1-0. N-P girls take 1st in three weight classes at Elkader scramble

The Nashua-Plainfield girls wrestling team traveled to Elkader on Monday and brought home three individual first-place finishes from the Central Scramble tournament. Ryan Reams captured first in the 115C weight class by pinning New Hampton’s Kaylee Wertz in 49 seconds, teammate Lillie Caster at 2:00 and Denver’s Jules Neubauer in 52 seconds. Elexa O’Neill placed first in 125 D with pins of West Delaware’s Emily Gudenkauf in 45 seconds, Denver’s Ella Martin at 1:46, and Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Isabel Christensen at 2:17. Charles City’s girls wrestling team entered eight members in the Central Scramble in Elkader on Monday and captured three first-, three second- and two third-place weight class finishes. Each Comet had at least one pin. As a team they scored 11 falls. Lilly Luft took first at 135 with a pair of pins and one decision. WV coach gets national recognition

The NICL-East volleyball Coach of the Year, Wapsie Valley’s Austin Shepherd, has also been recognized by a national coaching association. The American Volleyball Coaches Association chose Shepherd as a 2022 Class of 30 Under 30 High School Award recipient. The program was established in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport, and was expanded in 2016 to include a category for high school coaches. N-P’s Rinken signs to wrestle at UNI

Nashua-Plainfield senior Garret Rinken signed his National Letter of Intent on Monday to continue his wrestling career at the University of Northern Iowa next year. Rinken capped his junior season by taking second in the Class 1A 120 weight class at the 2022 State Wrestling Championships. His season record was 57-1. Ten Nashua-Plainfield football players have received All District honors this year. Titus Evans, Bo Harrington, Aiden Lamborn and Tate White have been named to the Class A District 3 All District first team. West Central coach nominated for national award

West Central head football coach Steve Milder is the Iowa nominee for The National High School Coaches Athletic Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year. This award program has been in existence since the early 1980s and is the longest-running of it’s kind in the country, according to an announcement from the school. EBF upsets Wapsie Valley at State volleyball tournament in four sets

No. 6-seed Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont upset No. 3 Wapsie Valley 3-1 (25-22, 11-25, 25-20, 25-21) in the Class 2A quarterfinals of the State volleyball tournament on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. After the Rockets took the first set, 25-22, Wapsie Valley, appeared to be asserting dominance in the second set. The Warriors put an end to back-and-forth scoring with EBF when the Rockets hit 10 points. The Warriors went on a 15-1 scoring run. Western Christian defeats Sumner-Fredericksburg in State volleyball quarterfinals

Western Christian defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-24, 25-18) in the Class 2A quarterfinals on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids.
