It began with the Comet families. “Let’s go Comets” Three claps with the chant. “Let’s go Comets!” More voices, more claps. It was the fourth quarter and the game was out of reach by more than 20 points. Waverly-She’ll Rock (16-6) went on to win the Class 4A Region 5 quarterfinal 62-25. ROCKFORD — Nine Huskies contributed points in Nashua-Plainfield’s girls basketball win Tuesday night in Rockford. N-P’s Kadence Huck led all scorers with 11 points in the 53-14 victory. Myranda Webster and Paige Franzen each scored 8 points followed by Kendall Bailey-Pint (7), Ava Kirk (6), Bailey Fisher (6), Jalynn Pratt (3) and Marleigh Lowe and Elayna O’Neill with 2 apiece. WF girls win relocated game against N-P
West Fork made itself right at home Friday, defeating Nashua-Plainfield 59-27. The WarHawks are now 9-0. N-P is 2-7. Leah Weaver led West Fork scorers with 20 points. Kandace Huck and Jaylynn Pratt each scored 8 to lead N-P, followed by Marleigh Lowe, Bailey Fisher and Paige Franzen with 3 apiece. Myranda Webster scored 2. Originally scheduled as an away game at West Fork, but a fire in a shot clock there forced it to be relocated to Nashua. Up next: N-P travels to Rockford (1-8) on Tuesday, Jan. 10. N-P splits hoops doubleheader with North Butler
It was by no means emphatic, but Corbin Lewis’s third-quarter dunk made a statement. North Butler was not going away. Nashua-Plainfield went into the half of Monday night’s home boys basketball game with a 27-24 lead. The Bearcats then opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run capped off with the dunk to give them a 30-27 lead. N-P’s Bo Harrington then nailed the first of his two 3 pointers to tie game at 30-30. NASHUA — Kadence Huck scored 22 points to lead Nashua-Plainfield past Rockford, 59-21, Thursday night at home. The Huskies jumped out to a 22-4 lead in the first quarter on their way to a 51-9 halftime lead. Rockford’s top scorer was Avaree Jeffries with 6 points. Aplington-Parkersburg stops Oelwein girls
PARKERSBURG — Aplington-Parkersburg made 13 3-pointers as they won 60-25 over the visiting Oelwein girls basketball team. A-P’s Ellen Waller sank six of those 3-pointers as she put up 21 points to lead all scorers. Ninth-grader McKinzie See led Oelwein with 16 points. The Falcons improved to 2-0. Downing to coach Charles City High School girls basketball
NEWS RELEASE CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Tyler Downing, a 15-year coaching veteran, will be named the Charles City High School head girls basketball coach of his alma mater pending board approval by the Charles City Community School District Board of Education Monday evening. Mr. Downing is a social studies teacher with the Charles City High School. He was hired in 2009 as a special education teacher and accepted an opening in the social studies department earlier this year.
