Charles City School District announces Summer Food Program

CHARLES CITY — Charles City Community Schools will once again be participating in the Summer Food Service Program, a news release from the school district announced.  “Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service,” it said. Parents are encouraged to accompany younger children. An adult meal may be purchased for $3.50.  No food is to be shared or carried out of the building. Annual Cedar Dog Jog is June 10

CHARLES CITY — Run or walk June 10 to help homeless pets in the Charles City area. The annual PAWS Cedar Dog Jog returns at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 10.  According to the registration website, the price to run or walk the 5K route that begins in Riverside Park is $30 for an adult and $20 for children 15 years old or younger. A family rate of $45 is also available. These rates include a T-shirt.  Participants can get a discounted price of $10 per adult and $5 per child if they decide to not get a T-shirt. Ron Holzer remembered as a happy guy

CHARLES CITY — Ronald “Ron” Holzer, 61, of Charles City, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. According to Ron’s wishes, he was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Hauser Funeral Home. Hail no! North Central Iowa hit again by destructive storms

Wednesday evening’s storms struck fast and furiously. At about 6 p.m., the Charles City Fire Department reported “many trees and powerlines down throughout (the) county, making many roads impassable.” A minute later, a spotter reported a tree branch knocking out power lines south of Charles City. These were two of many reports compiled by the National Weather Service about the high winds, hail and heavy rain that tore into north central Iowa Wednesday, May 17. Storm blasts through region

NASHUA — Although 75 mph winds were reported in Nashua and 1-inch hail in Charles City, the severe thunderstorms that raced through the region Monday evening saved its worse for locales farther east.   In New Hampton, as a rainbow spread above Nashua, 2-inch hail fell in the hard rain and high winds. Those winds sped up to 82 mph by the time they reached Calmar in Winneshiek County. In Fayette County, roofs blew off in numerous areas. Charles City boys and girls win home golf meet

CHARLES CITY — Jackson Molstead and Abby Milligan led the Comets boys and girls teams to first-place finishes Tuesday on their home course. Milligan won medalist status by shooting a 49 on Cedar Ridge Golf Course’s back 9. Teammate Gen Wandro was the runner-up with a 50. The girls team standings were 1. Charles City, 213; 2. Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Apel of Charles City passes at age 73

CHARLES CITY — Ronald “Ronnie” Apel, 73, of Charles City died Monday, April 24, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. A funeral service for Ron will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City with Pastor Coulter Page officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be held for an hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Charles City Schools to add soccer teams next school year

CHARLES CITY — Soccer is coming to Charles City High School next school year. The Charles City School Board  approved the addition of soccer to the 2017-18 high school activities. The district currently has an agreement with Mason City allowing Comets to play on the boys and girls teams. One girl and seven boys from Charles City are playing for the Mohawks. Jordan and Menken named king and queen of CC Prom

CHARLES CITY —A large head last seen in public during the Charles City 2016 Homecoming Pep Rally made an appearance Saturday night at the CCHS 2017 Prom Grand March. The bigger-than-life cardboard head of Prom king candidate Alex Koehler accompanied queen candidate Kristyn Pellymonter around the “red carpet” in the competition gym attached to the new middle school addition. WAVERLY, Iowa — Charles City graduate Mara Forsyth is more than a cornerstone of Wartburg College softball team’s offense. More accurately, she is the keystone. The junior infielder leads the 17-11 Knights in batting average among all players with more than two at-bats. In 28 games and 87 at-bats so far this season, Forsyth is batting .414. State says Lindaman deserves a new trial

By Chris Baldus, news@northcedarreports.com Former Floyd County Magistrate Doug Lindaman, who is serving a 10-year sentence in an Iowa prison, has new hope that his third-degree sexual abuse conviction will be reversed and he will get a new trial. Lindaman, who has had a handful of his post- conviction relief motions denied, is now the beneficiary of a motion  from the Iowa Attorney General’s Office to summarily reverse his conviction.  The Iowa Supreme Court will rule on the motion.
