CC girls drop home game to Indee
Independence took a 15-3 lead in the first quarter of Monday’s girls basketball game in Charles City on the way to a 64-36 win. The Comets outscored the Mustangs 15-14 in the second quarter, but Independence dominated the second half. Seniors Delaney Ruzicka and Ava Ellis each scored 12 points to lead the Comets. Ellis netted 7 points at the free throw line. Ruzicka led Charles City with 10 rebounds. The Comets are now 0-2. Independence is 1-0. DNR to host virtual meeting on chronic wasting disease Nov. 29
Iowa DNR News Release The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is hosting a virtual public meeting on chronic wasting disease on Nov. 29, from 7-8 p.m. Staff will provide an update on the science of the disease, its status in Iowa, and current management efforts. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and staff will answer as many as time allows. The Nashua-Plainfield girls wrestling team traveled to Elkader on Monday and brought home three individual first-place finishes from the Central Scramble tournament. Ryan Reams captured first in the 115C weight class by pinning New Hampton’s Kaylee Wertz in 49 seconds, teammate Lillie Caster at 2:00 and Denver’s Jules Neubauer in 52 seconds. Elexa O’Neill placed first in 125 D with pins of West Delaware’s Emily Gudenkauf in 45 seconds, Denver’s Ella Martin at 1:46, and Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Isabel Christensen at 2:17. Charles City’s girls wrestling team entered eight members in the Central Scramble in Elkader on Monday and captured three first-, three second- and two third-place weight class finishes. Each Comet had at least one pin. As a team they scored 11 falls. Lilly Luft took first at 135 with a pair of pins and one decision. She won by fall in 55 seconds over Union’s Ava Mehlert and Anastasia Simon at 1:03. She won a 10-3 decision over Independence’s Dakota Whitman. Pair rescued from rolled pickup Thanksgiving morning
After a rollover crash south of Elgin on Thursday, Nov. 24, occupants of the pickup were trapped inside. The Elgin Fire Department helped get them out. The pair was transported to Palmer Gunderson Hospital in West Union with minor injuries. At 4:47 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Fayette County deputies were called to the 19,000 block of Cedar Road because of a single vehicle rollover accident. The driver, a 25-year-old Elgin woman, had lost control of 2005 Chevrolet Silverado because of weather coy when traveling southbound. Ossian man struck and killed on road north of West Union
An Ossian man watching his car being pulled out of a ditch was struck and killed Monday night north of West Union. The incident is under investigation. Guadalupe Salgado Bernal, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 27000 block of Lincoln Road. According to a Fayette County Sheriff’s Office news release it received a report at 6:28 p.m. Nov. 21, about an SUV stoking a pedestrian on Lincoln Road north of West Union.
