Western Christian defeats Sumner-Fredericksburg in State volleyball quarterfinals

Western Christian defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-24, 25-18) in the Class 2A quarterfinals on Tuesday at Xtreme Arena in Cedar Rapids. N-P’s Huck finishes 10th at State Cross Country meet

Nashua-Plainfield’s Kadence Huck took 10th place in the Iowa High School Girls 1A Cross Country Championship this morning in Fort Dodge with a time of 19:27.1. Calamus-Wheatland’s Noelle Steines won with a time of 18:39.5, which beat her season best time of 18:58 on Oct.11. Huck passed the first mile mark at 6:07.2 in 13th place, a 10th of a second ahead of Alyssa Richmond, the Manson Northwest Webster sophomore who took first place at the Central Springs State Qualifying meet on Oct. 20. Captain Underpants wins pumpkin contest

Some pumpkins were just made to be super. The Kaci and Zach Sinwell family’s certainly was. The Nashua Public Library announced the winners of its Character Pumpkin Contest on Monday and the Sinwells’ Captain Underpants took first place. The library had asked patrons to decorate a pumpkin as their favorite book character. The rules were: Paint it, dress it, accessorize it, but no carving. A vote to choose the winner was held through Saturday. Nashua-Plainfield seniors Paige Ripley and Bailey Fisher and sophomore Paige Franzen have received Top of Iowa All-Conference honors. 1ST TEAM — Paige Ripley Ripley was named to the first team. This season, she was third in the conference with 288 successful serves, fourth with 404 assists. she also had 185 digs and 42 aces. 2ND TEAM — Bailey Fisher Fisher was named to the second team. ‘Polite’ Charles City man gets probation over gun possession as a felon

Michael O’Shea Anderson, Jr., 38, of Charles City, pleaded guilty in Chickasaw County District Court on Oct. 18 to one count of possession of a firearm as a felon. On Oct. 19 he received two years of probation on a suspended sentenced of to up to five years in prison. A $1,025 fine plus $153.75 surcharge were also suspended. He had been arrested following a July 24 traffic stop in Ionia. Sumner man sent to prison for sexual abuse in Chickasaw and Bremer Counties

After pleading guilty in two sexual abuse cases, Michael Adam Koch, 21, of Sumner, will serve up to 10 years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, although he has the possibility of parole. In Chickasaw County District Court, Koch pleaded guilty on Aug. 9 to lascivious acts with a child (a Class C felony) and was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. A $1,370 fine and surcharge were suspended, and second sex crime charge was dismissed, in accordance with the plea agreement reached with prosecution. Huck punches her ticket for State Cross Country Meet

Nashua-Plainfield’s Kadence Huck just keeps getting faster — 27.3 seconds faster this time around. The sophomore finished second at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Central Springs on Thursday with a Huskies school record of 19:16.7. The previous best, which she set at the Top of Iowa Conference meet a week earlier was 19:44.
