Dogs sniff for drugs at CC high school and middle school, as planned

Drug-sniffing dogs went through Charles City High School and Middle School today, as planned. The plans to search lockers and backpacks for illegal drugs was announced back in April, according to a message posted today on the School district website. It includes a link to a letter to the public by Superintendent Anne Lundquist explaining the search and decision to collaborate with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. “The primary goal for doing so is to strengthen our partnership with law enforcement and maintain a healthy learning environment in our schools,” Lundquist said. CC woman convicted of burglary

A Charles City woman was placed on probation after pleading guilty to a felony burglary charge in Chickasaw County District Court. Billy Jo Herman, 48, pleaded guilty on March 28 to third-degree burglary (Class D felony) and received a suspended prison sentence of up to 5 years. She was placed on two years of probation. Trial scheduled in Floyd County family’s fight with CO2 pipeline company

A Floyd County family’s fight to keep pipeline surveyors off its property is scheduled to go to trial in August. Summit Carbon Solutions, LLC, which plans to construct a carbon capture pipeline through Iowa, filed suit on Dec. 20 against Gary L., John E., Sandra K. and Joshua Lee Marth and the Marth Family Revocable Trust. The company claims state law gives it the right to enter and survey private property for its project. CC one of many school districts swatted with fake threats

Charles City appears to have been one of many schools across the state today receiving a false threat call. According to a news release from the Charles City Police Department, it and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office responded to the high school and middle school for a threat call. “It was discovered to be a false call which is being made around the entire state to other school districts,” the release posted on social media says. ” There was no danger to staff or children. Charles City defeats Mount Vernon, faces Marion on Monday for State berth

The 10-point lead Charles City held about halfway through the 4th quarter had evaporated. With 1:27 left, it was a 4-point game and Mount Vernon was racing toward a breakaway basket. Enter Comet Brennan Schmidt lunging from behind and knocking the ball loose to teammate Chase Low. He fires it ahead for a Kam Mestas dunk. Comet Gym shook as fans leapt to their feet. It was a key play in a game full of them, such as Jack Hanson netting a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds left when his Comets were clinging to a 62-61 lead. CC’s Blunt takes 8th at State Wrestling Tournament

Charles City senior Kayden Blunt (29-7) placed eighth in the Class 2A 182-weight class at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines last week. Blunt, seeded no. 8 in the 182-pound weight class, was upset in his tournament opening match on Wednesday. No. 9 Jace Mulder, a senior from Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, pinned Blunt in 28 seconds. Returning to the mats on Thursday, Blunt won his first two wrestle backs convincingly. First he won a 13-2 major decision over over no. 23 Cael Burmester (25-16), a junior at Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Fans cheer on CC girls basketball in playoff loss

It began with the Comet families. “Let’s go Comets” Three claps with the chant. “Let’s go Comets!” More voices, more claps. It was the fourth quarter and the game was out of reach by more than 20 points. Waverly-She’ll Rock (16-6) went on to win the Class 4A Region 5 quarterfinal 62-25. Charles City’s season ended with a 2-19 record. But the Charles City student section joined in, and in that moment the game seemed much closer. The Comets continued to battle. Five Charles City wrestlers are competing at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines this week: Carter Haberkorn (106), Nathan Lopez (145), Talan Weber (152), Kayden Blunt (182) and Ethan Peterson (195). Each lost 1 match on Wednesday, the first day of the tournament. So, the highest finish possible for any of them is third place. The Class 2A tournament resumes at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Five Charles City wrestlers qualified on Saturday for the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament: Carter Haberkorn (106), Nathan Lopez (145), Talan Weber (152), Kayden Blunt (182) and Ethan Peterson (195). Catch-photo-release tournament encourages Iowa walleye anglers to report their catches

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is partnering for a second year with MyCatch by Angler’s Atlas to conduct a statewide walleye fishing challenge starting May 1 through June 30. The Iowa Chapter of the American Fisheries Society has joined as a research partner for the 2023 challenge. Anglers will have the chance to win weekly prizes while also contributing to fisheries research, helping improve walleye fishing in the state. The Iowa Walleye Challenge uses the MyCatch mobile app to record the length of a fish. FRIDAY UPDATE: Luft wins 3rd State title

Three-time State champion. Charles City senior Lily Luft (40-0) won the 130-pound title Friday night with a 9-0 major decision over Chloe Sanders (47-5), a ninth-grader from Vinton-Shellsburg who was seeded No. 2. Luft was the top seed. Luft was dominant throughout the two-day IGHSAU Championships in Coralville. She had two first period pins and three major decisions. Including Luft, five Comets qualified for State, but four were finished on Thursday. Ava Thompson and Leah Stewart started strong by securing first match pins. 5 CC girls qualify for State Wrestling Tournament

Five members of Charles City’s varsity girls wrestling team are headed to State: Lily Luft, Morgan Malloy, Elizabeth Oleson, Leah Stewart and Ava Thompson. Charles City was one of 20 schools competing in the IGHSAU Region Qualifier 8 on Friday at Luther College. The top 4 wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the State Tournament, which is Feb. 2-3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville. As a team, Charles City placed third with 153 points. Osage won the tournament with 243, followed be Crestwood with 165. Lilly Luft (35-0) on Friday won the 130 class championship.
