Five members of Charles City’s varsity girls wrestling team are headed to State: Lily Luft, Morgan Malloy, Elizabeth Oleson, Leah Stewart and Ava Thompson.
Charles City was one of 20 schools competing in the IGHSAU Region Qualifier 8 on Friday at Luther College. The top 4 wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the State Tournament, which is Feb. 2-3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
As a team, Charles City placed third with 153 points. Osage won the tournament with 243, followed be Crestwood with 165.
Lilly Luft (35-0) on Friday won the 130 class championship. In the first-place match she pinned Lyni Gusick of Center Point-Urbana (36-3) at 1:31.
Elizabeth Oleson (24-8) win the 135 championship. In the first-place match, she pinned Annaliese Arciniega of Osage (36-16) in 44 seconds.
Ava Thompson (21-3) won the 235 championship match. In the first-place match, she pinned Abigail Lang of Iowa Falls-Alden (17-6) in 14 seconds.
Stewart captured second at 190 and Malloy (19-5) took third at 145.
Also competing at the regional tournament from Charles City were Savannah Baldus, Kylie Blunt, Teagan Cavanaugh and Nyssa Salinas.
