All 5 CC wrestlers still in contention for 3rd place at State

Five Charles City wrestlers are competing at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines this week: Carter Haberkorn (106), Nathan Lopez (145), Talan Weber (152), Kayden Blunt (182) and Ethan Peterson (195).

Each lost 1 match on Wednesday, the first day of the tournament. So, the highest finish possible for any of them is third place.

The Class 2A tournament resumes at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Below are summaries of Wednesday’s action for each Comet.

Carter Haberkorn (0-1)

CC junior Carter Haberkorn (19-12), was seeded no. 23 at 106. In the first round, no. 10 Klayten Perreault (38-6), a junior at Mount Vernon won by fall at 1:44 over Haberkorn.

Haberkorn received a bye in the first round of wrestle backs and is done for the day. On Thursday, he will face no. 9 Jace Curry (40-11), a freshman from Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Nathan Lopez (1-1)

CC senior Nathan Lopez (27-10), no. 20 at 145. He started the day by winning a 5-3 decision over no. 10 Reese Fauble (21-10), a Glenwood sophomore.

In the second round, no. 4 Jackson Jaspers, a junior from Mount Vernon, won a 9-8 decision over Lopez.

Lopez is done for the day. On Thursday in wrestle backs, he will open against no. 19 Jacob MacGargill (40-15), a freshman at Shenandoah.

Talan Weber (1-1)

CC junior Talan Weber (20-5), no. 13 at 152, won his first-round match by a 14-4 major decision over no. 20 Bryce Dodge (26-14), a Okoboji/HMS senior.

No. 4 Chase Thomas (31-6), a senior at Osage, defeated Weber in the second round by a 3-2 decision.

Weber is done for the day, but on Thursday he will begin with a wrestle back against no. 19 Jesse Grimes (34-11), a senior at North Fayette Valley.

Kayden Blunt (0-1)

CC senior Kayden Blunt (26-5), no. 8 at 182, received a bye in the first round. In the second, he lost by fall at 28 seconds to no. 9 Jace Mulder (38-8), a Boyden-Hull Rock Valley senior.

Blunt is done for the day, but on Thursday he will begin wrestle backs with a match against no. 23 Cael Burmester (25-15), a junior at Hampton-Dumont-CAL.

Ethan Peterson (0-1)

CC senior Ethan Peterson, no. 12 at 195, lost by fall at 6:00 in his first-round match to no. 21 Corbyn Palmer (22-7), a Waukon senior.

Peterson is done for the day, but will begin on Thursday with a wrestle back against no. 11 Emmitt Fleshman (37-9), a junior at West Lyon.
