Charles City 2017-18 Football Schedule 

The Charles City Comets football team begins its 2017 campaign Friday, Aug. 25, on the road in New Hampton. This season the Comets varsity in the regular season will face New Hampton, Osage, South Tama, Cedar Rapids Xavier, Independence (Homecoming), Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community, Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock. Charles City is hoping to return to the postseason after coming up short with a 3-6 2016 campaign. Their wins were over South Tama, Independence and Vinton-Shellsburg. Comet softball advances at State

FORT DODGE —The Charles City High School softball team defeated Fairfield 5-4 today to advance in the state tournament. Their next game begins at 1:30 p.m. Thursday on Diamond 2 at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Shantel Van Hauen lifted the Comets to victory in the 7th inning with a two-strike single to center that scored Tayler Schmidt.  The Comets entered the Class 4A bracket as the No. 7 against No. 2 Fairfield. Comet softball tops No. 1 to go to State

Charles City softball not only is advancing to the State Tournament, the Comets did it by knocking off the top-ranked team. No. 14 Charles City defeated No. 1 Benton, 2-1, on Tuesday. “This team believed they could win and they did!” head coach Brian Bohlen said on Twitter. “I couldn’t be more proud.” Charles City’s first round game begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Buena Vista University against second-seeded Fairfield (33-9). District play for Iowa high school softball begins next week. Here are the matchups for area teams: Class 1A, Region 4 Nashua-­Plainfield travels Monday, July 3, for a 5:30 p.m. first-round game against host Dunkerton. Rockford wins boys golf sectional; Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler sending individuals to districts

NASHUA — Juniors Zach Bushbaum and Nick Goodrich led the Rockford boys golf team to a first-place finish Friday at the Class 1A Boys Sectional Golf Meet at the Nashua Town and Country Club. Nashua-Plainfield and North Butler qualified individuals for next week’ district meet. At the sectional meet, Bushbaum defeated Saint Ansgar junior Dylan Low in a one-hole playoff for medalist. They were tied at 84 after 18 holes. Goodrich tied for third place with Saint Ansgar senior Ben Boerjan. They each scored an 85. DECORAH — The Charles City boys golf team will travel to Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah on Friday, May 12, for its Class 3A sectional meet. Golf begins at 10 a.m. Also competing in the meet are Decorah, Cresco, Waverly-Shell Rock, Oelwein, Independence, Union (LaPorte City) and West Delaware (Manchester). Nashua to host boys golf sectional meet on Friday

NASHUA — The Nashua Town and Country Club will host a Class 1A sectional boys golf meet beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, May 12. The teams competing are Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, Postville, Riceville, Rockford, Saint Ansgar and Turkey Valley. Teams advancing from the Nashua sectional and others in Algona, Grundy Center and Tripoli will compete in a district meet at 10 a.m., Friday, May 19, at the Mason City Country Club. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources compiles a fishing report each week from information gathered from bait shops, angler creel surveys and county and state parks staff. These are area waters listed in the report issued May 4: Clear Lake Water temperature is 56 degrees Fahrenheit. The restrooms at Lynne Lorenzen and jetties are open for the season. Fullerton leads Rockford’s division in girls golf

Sydney Fullerton of Rockford, after seven 9-hole rounds leads the East Division of the Top of Iowa Conference with  9-hole average of 49.43. That puts her third overall in the conference. Bailee Frayne of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura leads with a low average of 40.89. Her teammate. Carlee Frayne is second with 43.11. CHARLES CITY — Jackson Molstead and Abby Milligan led the Comets boys and girls teams to first-place finishes Tuesday on their home course.
