CHARLES CITY — Construction of the new Charles City Middle School along with its parking lot and Comet Drive came in a $112,436 under budget, the School Board heard in a report at it’s meeting Monday night. CCHS teacher raises alarm about student exchange funding

Teens face felonies in CCMS incident

CHARLES CITY — Two 14-year-olds — a girl and a boy — and one 15-year-old boy age facing felony terrorism charges. The 15-year-old boy was taken into custody last Wednesday after a Charles City Middle School parent reported an “inappropriate” post on social media linked to him. Middle school students told North Cedar Reports the post threatened violence against the school. Charles City Police continued their investigation which led them to the 14 year olds who were taken into custody on Thursday and remanded to juvenile authorities, police report. Jivin’ with Jazz keeps program in the groove

CHARLES CITY — Jivin’ with Jazz attracted a full house Tuesday night at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. The major fundraiser for the Charles City High School jazz band program included a performance by the school’s new jazz choir, Rhymes With Orange. It was also an occasion to put the spotlight on the band’s seniors, introduce middle school musicians and remember a lost friend. The placemats at the tables were designed for the 2011 Jivin’ with Jazz by jazz band member Trent Smith, who died in a crash last year on the Avenue of the Saints. CC School levy poised to dip

CHARLES CITY — The Charles City School District’s property tax rate will drop by 0.35 percent in fiscal year 2017-18 under the budget the School Board will review Monday. The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Charles City High School library. The budget will be voted on after a certified budget public hearing. CC musicians test themselves at day-long festival

Charles City High School musicians spent Saturday at Crestwood Junior and Senior High School performing in the Class 3A Iowa High School Music Association Solo/Ensemble Festival. Choir, band and orchestra students made the trip north. An initial bus left at 6 a.m. for the all-day festival. Judges critiqued each performance, giving on the spot reaction as well as written notes for the students to review later. Charles  City National Honor Society inducts new members

CHARLES CITY — The membership of the 2016-17  Charles City National Honor Society is complete. New members were inducted Thursday night at a ceremony in the high school gymnasium.  Hanna Bjelica was the keynote speaker. She talked about her eight-week experience after graduating last year from Charles City High School. She was a World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International Intern at the World Vegetable Center in Patancheru, India.  Bjelica encouraged the inductees to step beyond their comfort zones. CC Police investigate social media post reported by CCMS parent

CHARLES CITY — A 15-year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday after allegedly making a threatening post against the Charles City Middle School. The school district sent an email to the community at 1:20 p.m. explaining that this morning a Charles City Middle School parent reported the “inappropriate social media post” to Charles City School District administration. “After reviewing the post, the District contacted the Charles City Police Department for assistance. UPDATE: CCMS parking lot project advances

UPDATE: The Charles City School Board approved an agreement with Short Elliot Hendrickson, Inc. for professional services in the Charles City Middle School new parking lot project. The contract is capped at $30,600 The parking lot plan so far is to add 50 more parking spaces to the west of the middle school. The estimated cost is $160,374. It’s construction would begin in mid-May.   The board approved the west parking lot project as part of the summer of 2017 capital projects to be paid from sales tax and physical plant and equipment levy funds, according to district administration. CC Schools hosting night to connect students with spring and summer programs

The Charles City School District is inviting middle school students and their families to its first Community Connections Night from 5:30-7 p.m. at the middle school commons and gymnasium. It will feature many of the community’s organizations catering to spring and summer programs for students.  Organizations will share information about how middle school students can be involved in their programs. Many will have sign-ups available this night. This is a “fair style” event so come and go as you need. A free meal will be provided. CHARLES CITY — If you’ve been to a sporting event at the new competition gym added to the Charles City High School campus along with the new middle school, you’ve seen the problem. Parked vehicles flow out of the parking lot clogging the Comet Drive and beyond. The School Board is considering a plan to add 50 more parking spaces to the west of the middle school. Charles City School District enrollment drops in March 1 count

CHARLES CITY — Enrollment counts fluctuate throughout public school years. The trend for Charles City Community Schools is downward so far this year. The latest enrollment summary shows a loss of four students between the Oct. 1 count and the March 1 count, bringing the school year-to-date total to 17 students down. Washington Elementary, which serves pre-kindergarten through grade 2, has 344, students, the same as it did in October. That population did rise and fall over the months, however.
