Morning report, April 11: New CC school building done under budget, district preps for high school project

CHARLES CITY — Construction of the new Charles City Middle School along with its parking lot and Comet Drive came in a $112,436 under budget, the School Board heard in a report at it’s meeting Monday night. The board approved a contract with Estes Construction to again take the lead as construction manager on a possible related construction project, the renovation or reconstruction of the high school. 
Charles City officials are reviewing their options for what potentially is a catastrophic situation with the 1910 railroad bridge that today is a pedestrian crossing over the Cedar River as part of the Charley Western Trail. The city has blocked access to the bridge and also announced no river traffic is allowed under the bridge at this time.

 And in Floyd County news, a proposal by Supervisor Mark Kuhn regarding worker safety standards for confined animal feeding operations returns to the County Board today. The matter was tabled at the board’s last meeting at Kuhn’s request when he saw it was likely to be voted down. He said he would work on building consensus with affected parties before bringing the proposal back.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Floyd County Courthouse.

According to a report Monday by district administration, construction of the Charles City Middle School onto the high school cost in total $19,409,435, which is $64,064 under budget. 

The East Parking Lot cost $156,166, or $18,834 under budget.

And Comet Drive cost $335,444, or $29,538 under budget. 

The amounts under budget will be released from budgeted expenses, which increases the cash reserves in the PPEL /Sales Tax funds, according to the report.

Among the largest cost savings is found in the mechanical line item. The vendor was Mechanical Air. The work was $431,285 under budget at a final cost of $2,733,721.
