A Hawkeye woman accused of injuring her husband with swords is facing an attempted murder charge. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office took a 911 call at 8:29 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, reporting a domestic assault in progress at a residence on P Avenue in rural Hawkeye, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the residence where they found Cannon and then a 70-year-old man with severe lacerations to his face and back of his head, according to the criminal complaint. Jury selected in stray voltage civil trial

A jury of nine people has been selected for the Vagts Dairy stray voltage trial. Civil trials call eight jurors and one alternative juror. On Tuesday, eight men and one woman were selected. Four of the jurors are retirees. One is listed as a laborer and another as a farmer. The others work in the medical and transportation fields. The trial didn’t return to session on Thursday because of the winter storm. Something was seriously wrong in the herd at Vagts Dairy. Milk production and health problems emerged in the late 2010’s in the 500-cow Holstein herd. Cows eventually were not responding to veterinarian treatments, and many had to be shot or were sold, the West Union dairy farm owners say. SUV crosses centerline, causes crash outside Fairbank

The collision of an SUV and a pickup northeast of Fairbank seriously injured their occupants on Sunday. At 10:42 a.m., Jan. 15, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a two-vehicle accident on Y Ave. south of 40th Street.  A 2016 Chevy Equinox operated by Isaac Buzynksi, 21, of Fairbank crossed the center line and collided with a 2000 Chevy S10 pickup operated by Eric Sterba, 50, of Sumner, says a news release from the Sheriff’s Office. Fayette County inmate charged with attempted murder of jail staffer

An inmate is facing an attempted murder charge after allegedly assaulting a correctional officer at the Fayette County Jail this week, causing serious injuries. Jeannie Marie Murphy, 48, made an initial court appearance on Tuesday, Jan. 10. She was charged with attempted murder (Class B felony) and assault on persons in certain occupations using or displaying a dangerous weapon (Class D felony). Her bail was set at $25,000 cash or surety. Oelwein man gets 30 years for distributing methamphetamine and obstructing justice

News Release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Iowa A man who distributed methamphetamine out of his residence, conspired to have a government witness assaulted, and sexually abused multiple women was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. Justin Michael Buehler, age 39, from Oelwein, Iowa, received the prison term after a June 9, 2022 jury verdict finding him guilty of two counts of distribution of methamphetamine. Driver unhurt despite SUV rollover

A Fort Atkinson man escaped injury Wednesday morning when his SUV slid off the road and rolled in the ditch. The Fayette County Sheriff’s office took a 911 report at 5:45 a.m. about a one-vehicle accident north of West Union on Hwy 150. A 2005 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Patrick M. 2nd drug warrant executed at same Maynard residence in 3 months

Fayette County authorities arrested two people after executing a search warrant at a Maynard home on Dec. 30. This was the second warrant regarding illegal drugs at the home withing three months, according to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Two people were injured in a crash this morning near Oelwein when a minivan crossed lanes and hit an SUV. On Dec. 28, at 6:35 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 3, east of Oelwein near N Avenue. According to a deputy, a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Allen Krum, 41, of Stanley, was driving eastbound on Hwy. 3 when he crossed the center line and collided with a 2012 Dodge Journey operated by Lillian Smith, 52, of Strawberry Point. Crash on Christmas Eve near Fayette

No injuries were reported when a pickup fell into a road ditch near Fayette on Christmas Eve. At 11:44 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a single vehicle accident on 150th St. just west of Fayette. According to deputies, a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Zachary Bruns, 26, of Fayette was traveling west bound when he lost control due to the road conditions. The vehicle went into the north ditch landing on its side. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was towed from the scene. This accident remains under investigation.
