CAFO seeks to expand in Floyd County; Veterans Affairs OKs van fee; and County Board discusses members letters, opinion writing

CHARLES CITY — Expansion of a confined animal feeding operation in Pleasant Grove Township is on the Floyd County Board of Supervisors agenda Tuesday, April 24. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. According to the agenda, the board is expected to set a date and time for a public hearing on a construction permit application for a 2,508-head deep pit swine finisher confinement building. Lindaman guilty, again, but of a lesser crime

MASON CITY — With help from the Iowa Supreme Court, the state Attorney General’s Office, and an avalanche of his own court filings, Charles City’s Doug Lindaman, 62, has managed to get a felony conviction replaced with an aggravated misdemeanor verdict despite two juries ruling against him. The latest verdict arrived Wednesday in his third trial over alleged sexual abuse in 2011 of a 17-year-old he hired to do farm work. Jurors chose to convict Lindaman of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. He was originally charged with felony third-degree sexual abuse. CCPD returning items stolen from cemeteries

CHARLES CITY — The Charles City Police Department is trying to return items stolen from cemeteries to their rightful owners. “Back in December, we told you about a case where we had recovered quite a few items which were taken from area cemeteries,” says a post on the department’s Facebook page. “We have been returning numerous items to the owners since then but still have these items left. Spring clean up dates set in CC

CHARLES CITY — The city’s spring clean up dates have been set for April 23, 24,25 and 26.The guidelines are the same as last year, according to a city news release. For all of the guidelines for the clean up, click here. Do not put out any items prior to April 21.  The main reason for this is to help reduce the possibility of rains soaking up the items and causing heavier loads to the landfill.  It will also help reduce the potential of items being strewn around the neighborhood prior to pickup. County accepting applications for spring youth turkey hunt permits for Tosanak Recreation Area

MARBLE ROCK — Five youth permits will be drawn for the Spring Turkey Season at the Tosanak Recreation Area. Applications for the youth hunters will be due on, Sunday April 1, by 10 p.m. A public drawing will be held on Monday, April 2, at 8 a.m. at the Fossil & Prairie Center, 1227 215th St, Rockford. Five hunters will be drawn and are eligible for the youth season and all spring turkey seasons, until tag is filled. Charles City approves $1.85M incentive for Zoetis

UPDATE: The Charles City Council on Monday approved a $1.85 million incentive package to assist Zoetis, Inc. with a $55 million expansion of its local plant. The local incentive is estimated at almost $1.85 million and would come in the form of an eight-year, 90 percent property tax rebate through the Southwest Bypass Tax Increment Financing District. Zoetis has also received state incentives.
