N-P baseball to open postseason against Central City tonight

Nashua-Plainfield’s playoff opener against Central City was postponed from Saturday to tonight (Monday, July 3). The Class 1A Substate 3 District 5 first-round game will begin at 5 p.m. at East Buchanan High School in Winthrop. The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the brackets on June 22 for the first round of postseason games in Classes 2A and 1A. The opening games were scheduled for Saturday, July 1. The second round district games are on Wednesday, July 5. Winners will advance to the Saturday, July 8 district final, followed by substate final games set for Tuesday, July 11. WF gives N-P a scare, but Huskies win at home

West Fork batters took what Nashua-Plainfield pitchers gave up and erased a 5-run deficit over the 4th and 5th innings Wednesday at Stan Burkle Field. The Huskies came to the plate in the bottom of the 6th tied 9-9. N-P rebuilt a 2-run cushion when Wyatt Bouillon hit a run-scoring double and then scored on a line drive by Landon Pratt. Eli Kalainoff, pitching in relief, shut down West Fork in the 7th to get the 11-9 win. This story will be updated when statistics are available. Huskies squeeze out win over A-P

Nashua-Plainfield’s knack for getting out of jams seemed to be expiring. The Huskies entered the top of the 7th at Stan Burkle Field Tuesday evening with a 4-0 lead. Reliever Nic Brase returned to the mound after extinguishing a Falcon threat in the 6th, preserving starter Eli Kalainoff’s shutout. After getting the lead-off batter to fly out to left, everything went awry. You can’t start any faster. One pitch. One hit. One run. For the second-time this season, Nashua-Plainfield lead off hitter Eli Kalainoff opened a game with a solo home run. On Monday, he sent the first Central Springs pitch over Stan Burkle Field’s centerfield fence. JANESVILLE — The haze in the air was not Nashua-Plainfield’s fault, despite the Husky bats catching fire in the 6th inning. No, it’s still smoke coming down from Canadian forest fires. The red-hot Huskies (11-3) won their fourth game in a row Thursday night in Janesville, 8-3. The Wildcats (8-6) had defeated N-P in their last two matchups, in 2022 and 2020. Nashua-Plainfield has reached double-digit wins for the season as they barrel toward a showdown with the conference leader. The Huskies (10-3) defeated Northwood-Kensett, 12-1 in five innings at Stan Burkle Field behind a seven strikeout performance by junior Tucker Franzen. He gave up two hits and 1 earned run. ROCKFORD — Eli Kalainoff wasted no time. In Monday’s first at bat, he planted a home run ball in the corn behind Rockford’s left field fence. An inning later, the freshman did it again, this time adding 2 runs to Nashua-Plainfield’s burgeoning box score. The Huskies went on to defeat the Warriors 18-0 in five innings as sophomore Dawson Glaser delivered an eight-strikeout performance in which he face only 16 batters, just one more than perfection. N-P baseball snaps losing streak

SHEFFIELD — Nashua-Plainfield is back atop a wave. A baseball season comes in waves, head coach Levi Miller told his team Friday night after the Huskies defeated West Fork 17-0 in five innings. Those waves came crashing down onto the Huskies twice this week. Kee High on Tuesday pounded the Huskies 11-1. On Thursday, Don Bosco beat them 15-0. Those games were non-conference losses, however. Down by 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd, Nashua-Plainfield had a runner on base and needed something to pop. That’s when Eli Kalainoff stepped up to the plate. Statistically he was just the right guy to drive in the tying run. Through the first six games of the season, the freshman outfielder was batting .529 with seven singles, two doubles and 6 RBIs. N-P boys place 5th in sectional tournament, Rockford 2nd, North Butler 3rd

AGWSR won Wednesday’s Class 1A Boys Sectional Golf Tournament at Nashua Town and Country by 35 strokes. After 18 holes, AGWSR scored 335 as a team, followed by Rockford (370), North Butler (372), Dunkerton (386), Nashua-Plainfield (392), Clarksville (428) and Riceville (433).
