WATERLOO — Marion justified its No. 1 seed in the Class 3A Substate 4 playoffs by defeating No. 3 Charles City, 73-56, in the championship. The showdown between the Comets (17-6) and Wolves (19-5) took place Monday night at Waterloo East High School. Marion’s next stop is the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. Charles City defeats Mount Vernon, faces Marion on Monday for State berth

The 10-point lead Charles City held about halfway through the 4th quarter had evaporated. With 1:27 left, it was a 4-point game and Mount Vernon was racing toward a breakaway basket. Enter Comet Brennan Schmidt lunging from behind and knocking the ball loose to teammate Chase Low. He fires it ahead for a Kam Mestas dunk. Comet Gym shook as fans leapt to their feet. It was a key play in a game full of them, such as Jack Hanson netting a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds left when his Comets were clinging to a 62-61 lead. Comets boys advance to 2nd round of playoffs

Nashua-Plainfield and North Butler are moving deeper into the postseason after first-round victories Monday night. The Huskies won 80-63 on the road over Waterloo Christian, setting up a showdown on Thursday in Fairbank. Nashua-Plainfield (12-10) will tip off at 7 p.m against Wapsie Valley (18-4). ROCKFORD — The countdown stands at 16. Nashua-Plainfield’s Bo Harrington led all scorers Tuesday night in Rockford with 19 points as the Huskies won 65-29. Nic Goven led Rockford with 15 points. While Harrington’s performance helped the Huskies collect their sixth conference win of the season, it also put him within 16 of scoring his 1,000th career point. WF boys escape Nashua with a win

West Fork (6-1) beat Nashua-Plainfield 54-47 in Friday night’s game that was relocated from the WarHawks’ home to Nashua. A fire in West Fork’s shot clock forced the switch. N-P’s Bo Harrington led the Huskies with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Joel Winter had 10. Tucker Franzen added 4 and Landon Foelske and Matthew Malven each scored. N-P splits hoops doubleheader with North Butler

It was by no means emphatic, but Corbin Lewis’s third-quarter dunk made a statement. North Butler was not going away. Nashua-Plainfield went into the half of Monday night’s home boys basketball game with a 27-24 lead. The Bearcats then opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run capped off with the dunk to give them a 30-27 lead. N-P’s Bo Harrington then nailed the first of his two 3 pointers to tie game at 30-30. NASHUA — Bo Harrington scored 27 points to lead Nashua-Plainfield to a 73-52 victory Thursday at home over Rockford. Marshawn Taylor was Rockford’s top scorer with 17. N-P led at the half, 39-22. Rockford played a tighter second half, but the Huskies still outscored the Warriors, 34-30. Their season started out a bit rough, a 14-point deficit after one quarter kind of rough.
