Charles City 32, Waterloo East 8 The Comets (3-0) won their Homecoming game for the second year in a row, this time downing the Trojans (1-2), who had won their last three meetings with CC. The Comets’ last win over Waterloo East was 61-34 in 2018. CC beat Mason City, 19-14, in last year’s Homecoming tilt. The Comets matched their win total from last year, when they finished 3-6 after starting 2-0. NEXT: CC travels to Mason City (1-2) as the Riverhawks’ Homecoming opponent. CC school bond referendum fails

Charles City High School choirs performed Tuesday night on risers set up in the middle school’s competition gymnasium as the final ballots were cast in a bond referendum that would among other things fund construction of an auditorium. It looks as if the Comet choirs, bands and orchestras will continue performing along the basketball court’s sideline. Voters rejected the bond by a 1,390 to 1,038 Many of the singers performed over the weekend in the fall musical, “Godspell,” at the Charles Theatre downtown, a venue that limits the size of any production. Floyd County Board to consider more funding for communications position

The Floyd County Board of Supervisors on Monday plans to review and possibly vote on a communications and marketing partnership with the Charles City school district, municipal government and Area Development Corporation. The board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, in the Floyd County Courthouse Assembly Room. At the board’s Oct. 17 meeting, city and school district officials urged the county to join a 28E agreement to fund a community marketing and promotion liaison position. The new arrangement would replace lost funding that supports a Charles City Public Access Network position. Rockford FFA’s Jayden Jorgenson is a State Fair Horse Champion, winning the Flag Race title. The FFA Horse Show judged Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the 2022 Iowa State Fair. Nashua-Plainfield FFA, meanwhile, placed 9th for the Equestrian Team Award. New Hampton FFA took 10th. Agri-power FFA of Eddyville was 1st. James Grob, newspaperman and playwright, dies at 54

Contributed Obituary CHARLES CITY — James Gaven Grob died on July 5, 2022, after five years of battling cancer. He was 54 years old. He passed away peacefully at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City with his wife Michelle by his side. He was born on March 1, 1968, in Winona, MN and grew up in Oelwein. He was an athlete and part of the 1985 All-Conference Northeast Iowa Conference football team. He also participated in drama and speech. NEWS RELEASE FROM CCFD:   CHARLES CITY – The Charles City Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a 911 report of a structure fire at 701 Milwaukee St. in Charles City at about 9:05 p.m. Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, smoke was coming from a second story apartment of the 6-apartment complex. First arriving Police officers and Firefighters worked to alert and evacuate each of the apartments, as the next arriving Firefighters made entry with an interior attack of the fire. CCFD NEWS RELEASE CHARLES CITY –  The Charles City Fire Department was called to a house fire early Tuesday morning at 3:47AM, with a 911 report to the Floyd County Dispatch Center of a lightning strike to their home causing fire to be seen from the roof at the time of the 911 call. The CCFD responded to 2198 Old Highway Road, just Southeast of Charles City. It will be different from past cleanups in that it is scheduled in two parts: From April 12-23 residents can order a dumpster that they have one day to fill.
