Floyd County Fair Royalty Day is Tuesday, July 18

CHARLES CITY — Sure, the Floyd County Fair’s opening day is Wednesday, but Tuesday, July 18, is Royalty Day, judgment day for non-livestock entries and show time for pets and 4-Hers. The new Youth Enrichment Center will open at 9 a.m. for booth set-up and agronomy comments are at noon. Judging for all non-livestock exhibits begins at 1 p.m. in the Brick Building. Today’s forecast in the Charles City area is warning about sketchy weather today. Hail no! North Central Iowa hit again by destructive storms

Wednesday evening’s storms struck fast and furiously. At about 6 p.m., the Charles City Fire Department reported “many trees and powerlines down throughout (the) county, making many roads impassable.” A minute later, a spotter reported a tree branch knocking out power lines south of Charles City. These were two of many reports compiled by the National Weather Service about the high winds, hail and heavy rain that tore into north central Iowa Wednesday, May 17. Storm blasts through region

NASHUA — Although 75 mph winds were reported in Nashua and 1-inch hail in Charles City, the severe thunderstorms that raced through the region Monday evening saved its worse for locales farther east.   In New Hampton, as a rainbow spread above Nashua, 2-inch hail fell in the hard rain and high winds. Those winds sped up to 82 mph by the time they reached Calmar in Winneshiek County. In Fayette County, roofs blew off in numerous areas. NASHUA — Nashua-Plainfield’s Haley Hillesheim shot a 54 and Caleb Liddle a 45 on their home course May 2 to be named the meet’s medalists. Nashua Plainfield girls defeated West Fork at the Nashua town and country club the Huskies had the low score of 238. West fork shot 272. Nashua Plainfield’s Miranda Crabtree was runner up to Hillesheim with a 59. Nashua-Plainfield boys carded a 188. West Fork only fielded 3 golfers. Three golfers tied at 47 making them runners up to Liddle. They were Dillon Auchstetter and Drew Moine of Nashua Plainfield and Zach Laudner of West Fork. Water Summary Update shows no drought in Iowa thanks to cool, wet April

From the Iowa DNR DES MOINES— For the first time in almost a year, none of Iowa is shown in any form of drought or dryness in the latest Water Summary Update.  Conditions in Iowa continue to improve, especially in the areas of southeast Iowa that had been dry over the winter. Thanks to a wet and cool April, there are no drought designations in the state and shallow groundwater is now rated as normal to above normal across the state.
