Rep. Charley Thomson, R-Charles City, is among the co-sponsors of two bills relating to high school social studies and gender identity of students. The social studies bill requires teaching about “political ideologies that conflict with the principles of freedom and democracy that were essential to the founding of the United States.” A comparative discussion would need to include communism and totalitarianism in the required high school class on American government, according to the bill text. CC School Board votes for cuts; bond referendum shelved

There will be no $27 million bond referendum in March to renovate Charles City High School. There will be cuts to the district’s music, business and at-risk programs. That is where the Charles City School District stands today, following the School Board’s vote 3-2 Monday night to support a package of staff cuts and other expenditure reductions to try to make up an anticipated operating budget deficit of $758,470 next school year. CC School Board to meet at fairgrounds tonight, discuss cuts and taxes

The Charles City School Board will meet tonight (Jan. 23) in The Youth Enrichment Center at the Floyd County Fairgrounds. The agenda includes possible action regarding the projected budget shortfall for next school year. The board has been presented with plans that included cutting teaching staff. Those caused a public outcry particularly over reducing music teaching staff. Administration pulled its support for those plans. The Board has since been presented with new options that would raise property taxes between 28 cents and 42 cents per $1,000 valuation. Pipeline company files suit against Floyd County landowners

The company seeking to build a carbon capture pipeline through Iowa has filed suit against a Floyd County family over access to their land for surveys. Summit Carbon Solutions, LLC is seeking an injunction against Gary L., John E., Sandra K. and Joshua Lee Marth and the Marth Family Revocable Trust. It filed the petition on Dec. 20 in Floyd County District Court. Summit has tried and failed since April to get permission from the Marths for a survey crew to access particular tracts of their property east of Rockford, according to the filing. IOWA DNR The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will release trout in five locations across Iowa this winter in areas that would not support them during warmer months. Winter trout stockings are a great place to take kids to catch their first fish. Dangerously cold weather settles in

The blizzard is over, but the dangerous cold remains in north central and northeast Iowa as crews clean up roadways. “Gusty northwest winds will continue across the area into Christmas morning, but will be gradually diminishing,” the National Weather Service’s La Crosse, Wis., office says. “The combination of these winds and cold air temperatures will produce bitterly cold wind chills of 20 to 35 below into Christmas morning. Lily Luft notched her 100th career win on Saturday as the Charles City girls wrestling team won one dual during the two-day Battle of Waterloo. The Comets defeated Dallas Center-Grimes 42-33. Luft had five wins on the day int he 135-pound weight class, all by pin. Elizabeth Oleson at 140 won four matches by fall.
