N-P cross country races in Calmar; Huck takes first

CALMAR — Thirty-two seconds.

That’s more than three Snapchat videos.

That’s longer than you’d count between seeing lightning that’s six miles away and hearing the thunder.

It’s also the time that lapsed between Nashua-Plainfield sophomore Kandace Huck’s first-place finish Tuesday night in Calmar and the second-place finisher.

Huck won the varsity girls 5K cross county race at the South Winn Invitational with a time of 20:06.4. Central Elkader senior Hannah Asche took second at 20:38.5.

As a team, the Huskies girls squad captured sixth place out of a nine team field.

Junior Ellie Eick was N-P’s next finisher at 48th with a time of 24:12.1, followed by 9th-grader Jalissa White (56th, 24:36.3), sophomore Amberley Gerholdt (69th, 25:24.7), junior Alexis Weiss (82nd, 26:34.0), junior Emma O’Neill (107th, 29:30.4) and senior Sheyenne Bergmann (118th, 35:54.1).

South Winneshiek won the girls team championship with 49 points followed by Decorah (2nd, 53), Central Elkader (3rd, 91st), Waukon (4th, 96), MFL MarMac (5th, 156), Nashua-Plainfield (6th, 159), Saint Ansgar (7th, 184), Kee Lansing (8th, 193), and Clayton Ridge (9th, 225).

The N-P boys varsity team finished seventh out of nine, with Jace Hansen as it’s top finisher at 43rd with a time of 19:00.4. He was followed by Caleb Sinnwell (63rd, 20:00.0), Caleb Lentz (69th, 20:18.1), Brexton Bird (73rd, 20:25.9), Luke Paplow (85th, 20:59.4), Levi Winters (90th, 21:32.9), Brad Lensing (113th, 22:41.0).

Waukon took first as a team with 35 points, followed by Decorah (2nd, 63), Clayton Ridge (3rd, 92), MFL MarMac (4th, 121), Postville (5th, 125), South Winneshiek (6th, 154), Nashua-Plainfield (7th, 198), Central Elkader (8th, 207), and Waterloo Christian (9th, 220).

Waukon won the boys 5K with 35 points, followed by Decorah, Clayton Ridge, MFL MarMac, Postville,SouthWinneshiek, Nashua-Plainfield, Central Elkader (8th, 207 ), and Waterloo Christian (9th, 22).

UP NEXT

N-P cross country will travel to Fredericksburg to race Thursday at Plum Creek Golf Course, Fredericksburg. Races will begin at 4:15 p.m. Teams competing include Cedar Falls, Central Springs, Crestwood, Dunkerton, New Hampton, Riceville, St. Ansgar, Sumner-Fredericksburg, Tripoli, and Wapsie Valley.
