The Charles City boys track team placed 5th at the second session of the Pirate Relays on Thursday in Hudson. Grundy Center took first with 159.5 team points followed by Denver (97.50), Dike-New Hartford (62), South Hardin (52), Charles City (44.5), BCLUW (43.5), Clarksville (43.5), AGWSR (36), South Tama (36), Hudson (35), West Marshall (35), Dunkerton (24.5), Jesup (21), Don Bosco (18), Gladbrook-Reinbeck (14), Starmont (11), Mason City (7) and North Tama (1). N-P track teams soar at home invite
Nashua-Plainfield’s boys track and field team handily won its half of the co-ed home invitational on Tuesday, while the girls grabbed second place. N-P’s boys captured first with 161 team points followed by Central Springs (116), Northwood-Kensett (65), Janesville (61), Clarksville (54), Dunkerton (54), Turkey Valley (49) and Riceville (28). Northwoods-Kensett took first among the girls teams with 112 followed by N-P (87), Clarksville (80), Central Springs (74), Janesville (59), Turkey Valley (58), Dunkerton (57) and Riceville (48). N-P boys track team takes 3rd in Hudson
The Nashua-Plainfield boys track and field team tied for 3rd out of 12 teams in Hudson on Thursday, April 6, at the Pirate Relays. The Huskies took 1st in two events. The team of Blaine Brannon, Aiden Gelner, Joel Winters and Jase Hansen won the 1600 medley relay with a time of 4:00.27. Aiden Lamborn won high jump with a 6 foot leap. The indoor track season is over, and on Tuesday the N-P girls track and field team competed in its first outdoor meet of the season, placing 4th. The Saints placed 1st with 137 points followed by Osage (130), West Fork (82), N-P (75), Northwood-Kensett (48), North Butler (40), Newman Catholic (25) and Riceville (20). Every point counts. Sure, first place gets 10 team points, but that single point from a 6th place finish could make all the difference. That’s the message Nashua-Plainfield boys track and field head coach Chase Sudol imparted on his squad prior to Tuesday’s meet in Saint Ansgar. The Iowa High School Athletic Association recently announced the new football districts for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Nashua-Plainfield is in Class A District 3 with: WHAT CHANGED: Grundy Center (13-0, 5-0) and Hudson (4-5, 3-3) moved out of District 3 . North Butler and South Winneshiek moved in. Huck places 1st twice as 5 Huskies notch top 10 finishes at Wartburg invite
Nashua-Plainfield’s boys and girls varsity track and field teams competed in the Wartburg High School Invitational on Tuesday in Waverly. The 30-school field ranged from Class 1A to Class 4A. The top finisher for the Huskies was Kadence Huck, who placed first in the girls 400 with a time of 58.56 and the 800 at 2:23.04. Oelwein archers qualify for State Tournaments
Members of three archery teams from Oelwein have qualified for state tournaments this weekend — Wings Park, the high school and the middle school teams. The 3D State Tournament and the Bullseye State Tournament will be will be March 4-5, in the 4-H Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. WATERLOO — Marion justified its No. 1 seed in the Class 3A Substate 4 playoffs by defeating No. 3 Charles City, 73-56, in the championship. The showdown between the Comets (17-6) and Wolves (19-5) took place Monday night at Waterloo East High School. Marion’s next stop is the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. Charles City defeats Mount Vernon, faces Marion on Monday for State berth
The 10-point lead Charles City held about halfway through the 4th quarter had evaporated. With 1:27 left, it was a 4-point game and Mount Vernon was racing toward a breakaway basket. Enter Comet Brennan Schmidt lunging from behind and knocking the ball loose to teammate Chase Low. He fires it ahead for a Kam Mestas dunk. Comet Gym shook as fans leapt to their feet. It was a key play in a game full of them, such as Jack Hanson netting a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds left when his Comets were clinging to a 62-61 lead. Comets boys advance to 2nd round of playoffs

Charles City (16-5) defeated Independence (8-14) at home on Monday in a Class 3A Substate 4 first round game, 71-33. Rinkens bring home two state wrestling championships, 3 others place
Nashua-Plainfield is home to two 2023 Class 1A state champions. Senior Garret Rinken completed an undefeated season, 51-0, by beating Wapsie Valley senior Dawson Schmit (40-8) by a 4-1 decision in the 126-pound championship match on Saturday at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. His younger brother, sophomore Jayden Rinken (47-2), defeated Wilton freshman Mason Shirk (47-4) by an 8-2 decision in the 106-pound championship match. CC’s Blunt takes 8th at State Wrestling Tournament
Charles City senior Kayden Blunt (29-7) placed eighth in the Class 2A 182-weight class at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines last week. Blunt, seeded no. 8 in the 182-pound weight class, was upset in his tournament opening match on Wednesday. No. 9 Jace Mulder, a senior from Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, pinned Blunt in 28 seconds.
