Comets win Homecoming, 19-14
Mason City scored the first 14 points at Charles City’s Homecoming football game. The Comets scored the rest. Charles City (3-1) beat the RiverHawks 19-14. All three of the Comet touchdowns came on big plays, starting with a senior receiver Keenan Wiley weaving through defenders for a 59-yard score. Senior kicker Jack Hanson nailed the extra point. Wiley then scored an 87-yard touchdown off quarterback senior Jordan Foster’s sideline pass. The extra point attempt failed and Mason City went into the half leading 14-13. Huck takes 1st, Huskies 5th at Union cross country meet
Kadence Huck picked up where she left off last season as she took first individually in the girls 5K at the Union Invitational on Thursday in La Porte City. As a team, the Huskies finished fifth out of seven teams. Huck had a time of 19:20.9. Amilia Condon of Union was second at 19:33.4. In the Class 1A championship race last year, Huck finished 10th with a time of 19:27.07. Her season best was 19:16.7. Conference honors Huskies baseball players, coach
Miller, 7 Huskies honored by conference Nashua-Plainfield baseball head coach Levi Miller is this season’s Top of Iowa-East Coach of the Year. Seven Huskies also received all-conference honors: 1st team – Tucker Franzen, Dawson Glaser, Bo Harrington and Eli Kalainoff; 2nd team – Wyatt Bouillon and Kendrick Huck; and honorable mention – Landon Pratt. Pratt, Franzen honored by conference
Nashua-Plainfield junior Jalynn Pratt was named to the Top of Iowa-East all-conference second team. N-P sophomore Paige Franzen received honorable mention. Pratt batted .265 this season while driving in 11 runs and scoring 7. She hit 11 singles, five doubles and two triples. She led the team with nine stolen bases and a .952 fielding percentage as third baseman. Franzen had a .280 batting average and hit 10 singles and four doubles. She drove in 11 runs and scored 6. Huskies fall in 2nd round of baseball playoffs
A 6-run sixth inning was too much for Nashua-Plainfield to overcome Wednesday night against East Buchanan. The Buccaneers won 10-4 in the Class 1A Substate 3 District 5 second round game played at North Linn. The Bucs (13-9) will play North Linn (25-4) in the next round on Saturday, July 8. The Huskies (17-8) finished with their best season winning percentage, 0.680, since at least the 2006-07 season (16-1-5, 0.841), according to GoBound.com records. ••• Check out photos and order prints downloads and more by clicking here. Monday’s playoff game started with a shock to the system. Central City, which won five games in the regular season jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning over 16-game winner Nashua-Plainfield. The Huskies answered back with only 2 runs in the bottom half. Then, N-P starting pitcher Dawson Glaser reset and threw shutout baseball the rest of the way, leading the Huskies to a 6-3 victory at East Buchanan High School in the Class 1A Substate 3 District 5 first round. N-P baseball to open postseason against Central City tonight
Nashua-Plainfield’s playoff opener against Central City was postponed from Saturday to tonight (Monday, July 3). The Class 1A Substate 3 District 5 first-round game will begin at 5 p.m. at East Buchanan High School in Winthrop. The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the brackets on June 22 for the first round of postseason games in Classes 2A and 1A. The opening games were scheduled for Saturday, July 1. The second round district games are on Wednesday, July 5. Winners will advance to the Saturday, July 8 district final, followed by substate final games set for Tuesday, July 11. Saturday’s scheduled playoff opener between Clayton Ridge (5-23) and Oelwein (10-19) was postponed. The Eagles and the Huskies will play the Class 2A Substate 3 District 5 game at 5 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Starmont High School in Arlington. In order of seeding, the teams in Class 2A Substate 3 District 5 are: 1. Cascade (21-8), 2. Sumner-Fredericksburg (18-5), 3. Starmont (10-13), 4. Oelwein (10-16), 5. Clayton Ridge (5-23), 6. WF gives N-P a scare, but Huskies win at home
West Fork batters took what Nashua-Plainfield pitchers gave up and erased a 5-run deficit over the 4th and 5th innings Wednesday at Stan Burkle Field. The Huskies came to the plate in the bottom of the 6th tied 9-9. N-P rebuilt a 2-run cushion when Wyatt Bouillon hit a run-scoring double and then scored on a line drive by Landon Pratt. Eli Kalainoff, pitching in relief, shut down West Fork in the 7th to get the 11-9 win. This story will be updated when statistics are available. CC sweeps Waukon at home
Charles City’s bats were explosive in game 1. They were dramatic in game 2. The Comets swept their home doubleheader in Monday against Waukon, 15-8 and 5-4, improving their season record to 14-16. Waukon is now 15-16. In the early game, Malachi O’Brian had three hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in 5 runs. Kayden Blunt had 4 RBIs off two hits, a single and a home run Lincoln Joslin drove in 3 runs while connecting for four hits. He also got the win as the starting pitcher. Huskies squeeze out win over A-P
Nashua-Plainfield’s knack for getting out of jams seemed to be expiring. The Huskies entered the top of the 7th at Stan Burkle Field Tuesday evening with a 4-0 lead. Reliever Nic Brase returned to the mound after extinguishing a Falcon threat in the 6th, preserving starter Eli Kalainoff’s shutout. After getting the lead-off batter to fly out to left, everything went awry. A single, an infield error, a pitch in the dirt bouncing off the catcher’s mask and a base on balls put A-P in position to tie the game. With two outs, the Falcons tried to steal home.
