Help the DNR count turkeys

Iowa DNR News Release The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for help with its annual wild turkey production survey.  During the months of July and August wild turkey sightings are recorded to estimate this year’s nesting rates and nest success.  Participation is easy – just note the date and county in which the turkey was seen, if it was an adult female or adult male – males have beards on their breast – and if and how many poults (baby turkeys) were present. DNR issues air quality advisory through Wednesday

IOWA DNR NEWS RELEASE DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an air quality advisory for the entire state with the worst air quality expected in the eastern third of Iowa. Eastern Iowa is currently recording fine particulates at concentrations the EPA considers unhealthy. At this level sensitive groups of people, as well as the general public, may experience health effects. Fine particulate levels near or above EPA health standards are expected to increase throughout the day and persist in these areas through tomorrow. CC sweeps Waukon at home

Charles City’s bats were explosive in game 1. They were dramatic in game 2. The Comets swept their home doubleheader in Monday against Waukon, 15-8 and 5-4, improving their season record to 14-16. Waukon is now 15-16. In the early game, Malachi O’Brian had three hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in 5 runs. Kayden Blunt had 4 RBIs off two hits, a single and a home run Lincoln Joslin drove in 3 runs while connecting for four hits. He also got the win as the starting pitcher. Water temperatures are in the 70s. Canadian wildfire smoke fouls Iowa air

IOWA DNR NEWS RELEASE DES MOINES – Yesterday an approaching cold front pulled smoke from Canadian wildfires down to ground level, and areas of unhealthy, very unhealthy, and hazardous air quality were measured across much of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. Twenty-four hour averages of fine particulate levels that EPA considers unhealthy for sensitive groups were also measured at Emmetsburg, Iowa, yesterday. Cedar River (above Nashua) Water clarity is muddy with high flows. Water levels are falling, but up about 3 feet. Water temperatures are on the rise with warmer weather.  Channel Catfish – Good: Try a dead chub or stink baits fished in slack water areas. Smallmouth Bass – Slow: Try fishing eddies and current breaks. Walleye – Slow: Use a jig tipped with a minnow or worm below dams. Try using a 3-way with enough weight to keep the weight on the bottom. Decorah District Streams Area streams are in good condition. All stocked streams are announced at least once a month. Dogs sniff for drugs at CC high school and middle school, as planned

Drug-sniffing dogs went through Charles City High School and Middle School today, as planned. The plans to search lockers and backpacks for illegal drugs was announced back in April, according to a message posted today on the School district website. It includes a link to a letter to the public by Superintendent Anne Lundquist explaining the search and decision to collaborate with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. “The primary goal for doing so is to strengthen our partnership with law enforcement and maintain a healthy learning environment in our schools,” Lundquist said.
