North beats South in 39th All Star dual in Charles City; N-P wrestler collects title in freestyle tournament

CHARLES CITY — The North All-Stars defeated the South All-Stars despite the victories of two Comets.

The 39th annual senior North vs. South All Star Wresting Meet was held Saturday, March 25, in the Charles City School District’s competition gym. The Charles City Mat Club and the Iowa National Guard sponsored the tournament.

The 2017 Charles City Freestyle Tournament was earlier on Saturday. More than 180 wrestlers from around the state competed.

The North Iowa All-Stars defeated the South Iowa All-Stars 47-12, according to TrackWrestling.com. Half of the South All-Stars’ points came from two Charles City wrestlers, Nate Lasher and AJ Maloy. They each contributed 3 points. Lasher won by a 7-3 decision over Blake Bauer of Southeast Warren. Maloy won by a 3-2 decision over Blade Durbala of Benton.

Charles City’s Alex Koehler and North Butler’s Dalton Nelson wrestled for the North, but lost 4-2 and 3-1 decisions, respectively

In the freestyle tournament, Nashua-Plainfield captured a title in the Novice division. Kendrick Huck took first in Freestyle-N-4 with two technical falls, first over Luke Johnson of the Indee Mat Club (10-0) and then Evan Simpson of the USA Mat Club (11-0)

Eli Kalainoff also wrestled for Nashua-Plainfield. He was in the Intermediate division.
Wrestling for the Charles City Mat Club were Ethan Peterson in Novice, Logan Carey and Rovsh Jaeger in School Boy, Jack Sindlinger in Cadet and Sam Niichel.

Jaeger took second in Freestyle-SB-7 with an 11-0 technical fall over Jett Nehls of Osage

Sindlinger took second in Freestyle-C-10 with two victories. He pinned Joseph Loffa at 48 seconds and defeated Marcos Gonzalez of Belmond-Klemme Wrestling with a 10-0 technical fall

Niichel placed third in Freestyle-J-11. He scored one win with a pin at 5:11 over Lucas Dawson of Indee Mat Club.
